I'm trying very hard to convince myself that Judge Davey's stalling doesn't mean anything bad, but it's not working. Any thoughts? I finished writing the following letter to the herald after their not endorsing Katherine (see here)
My letter:
Once again, media bias attacks Katherine Harris. Yes, Harris should have better understood the states resign-to-run laws. However, Harris corrected the mistake quickly, and was not the only official to be tripped up. She not only survived a brutal introduction to national politics, but is experienced in this region. This should mean an endorsement in the Republican primary.
Before the election, this paper supported Harris. In it's non-endorsement, it said that it wishes Harris would channel energy into results. Years ago it was reported: "Harris was Southwest Florida's point-woman on budget issues, the region's only lawmaker on the conference committee that worked out the key decisions. That meant working a marathon weekend session a week before adjournment and getting six hours' sleep in two days." (Herald-Tribune, May 19, 1996.) Harris' dedication to the area has been overlooked in recent months, as has been the pork she could bring home.
Harris is a Conservative. That doesn't appear to trouble many locals. This year, she was still voted "Favorite Politician" by Sarasota Magazine, a sign that her "antithetical" values and "missteps" have not severely bruised the image she's had since moving here. Its unreasonable for the Herald to say that Harris' conservatism should be a reason not to endorse her. Harris could be described as socially aware yet Conservative. That could describe Sarasota also.
Yesterday The Herald exaggerated Harris mistakes with broad generalities. After months of pushing negative coverage of Harris, it was a cop-out for this paper not to endorse Hill. But the decision was made because endorsing Hill would provoke public outrage.
Perhaps Sarasota Republicans would like to shy away from the cloud of controversy that follows Katherine. But that would mean giving into a media echo chamber, something that, ironically enough, Harris' treatment reinforced the existence of.

Yes, Conservatives still eat their young.

I've even noticed some of that here at FreeRepublic. We need to stick together. Anyway, good luck with the campaign.

My very wild guess is that she wins the RP primary, gets d'q'ed by the judge, and then gets reinstated on appeal.
I don't think the judge wants to d'q' her when she lacks enough time to appeal his decision before the primary election. So, I think that is what he will probably do (disqualify her from the ballot retrospectively.).
After the 2000 election, needless to say, the election laws and the precidents in Florida are somewhat confusing. I suspect Judge Davey doesn't want to wade into the middle of this.
This will definitely be an interesting one to watch.
Well, assuming you really are a tenth-grader -- or anybody else, for that matter -- I think this may well be one of the most interesting elections that will take place this year.
I suggest you start by looking at how the Florida Supreme Court ruled in the last presidential elction versus how the U.S. Supreme Court ruled. It's not simple.
Read them yourself; don't rely on what other people tell you about them.
Do you follow the letter of the law as it was written, or do you follow the principle of giving everyone the right to vote even if some rules have been broken? When do you out off that right and come to a final decision? What if there are disputes?
Not so easy.
I looked a little at your profile.
If you really are a tenth-grader, you better know that you should take yourself *very* seriously. You ain't exactly dumb, nor are you common..
My one concern is that you might be becoming a conservative too young in your life. A very wise man once told my son something about that which I don't really want to repeat verbatim here. The general idea was that it is okay for young and idealist people to be liberal. That's normal.
It is less okay for older people like me to do that. We tend to get more jaded and more cynical about all institutions, governments included. We get more interested in the things that immediately surround us. That could be selfish, but it really isn't. You take care of your own first. That's simply primal. It doesn't mean you don't care about anyone else.
My concern is that you could be starting out the wrong way. You may (likely will) correct that in the years after college and it will need/get/find other adjustments after that, but for now I think you should probably be giving the liberals the benefit of the doubt.
Some experience on the other side would not be such a bad thing.
Conservative should support Conservatives and
out the RINO's for the traitors that they are.
Leave the kid alone Harry, she seems to have a pretty good grasp
of the issue.
Allow a fool to rush in...
If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain. This quotation has been mis-attributed to Winston Churchill.
