It's time to legalize pot
Sentinel Review ^ | 9/5/2002

It's enough for a big thumbs up ... or a big light up, if you prefer.

Canada should legalize marijuana use by adults, a Senate committee recommended Wednesday. The report comes on the heels of a two-year study of public policy relating to pot.

The present system of prohibition on marijuana just doesn't work, the committee found. Obviously, the committee learned something from early 20th-century history, when alcohol was prohibited in the United States. Then, prohibition simply gave gangsters a product to move and people to shoot.

Instead of the current system that penalizes people for having small quantities of pot on them, there should instead be a regulated system for marijuana, perhaps like our current system for alcohol, the committee determined.

"Scientific evidence overwhelmingly indicates that cannabis is substantially less harmful than alcohol and should be treated not as a criminal issue but as a social and health issue," said Senator Pierre Claude Nolin, the committee chair.

It's true that taking pot still involves the harmful intake of smoke, which the committee recognized. But, as the committee pointed out, it's more of a health issue than anything else.

In addition, making pot legal would clear the way for our police to tackle other, more harmful crimes relating to the public good. Really, would you rather see a pot smoker or a child molester behind bars?

Whether the federal government will ever adopt the Senate recommendations is up in the air. Hopefully the feds won't throw up a smokescreen on this to cloud the issue, and goes ahead with legalization.

Soros may be against the WOD's, but other than that he's pretty much a socialist. Big deal.

Hitler didn't drink and he didn't smoke. Does that mean everyone else should start to prevent another Hitler?

You have a seriously screwed up grasp of logic.

If giving up pot means I'll be exactly as intelligent as most of these Drug Warriors - pass me the bong!

Bringing the Clintons into this debate is a diversionary tactic on your par

Huh you better take that to Hillary, she is one of George Soros's(uber drug legalizer) best friends.

I guess Bill Clinton pardoning Marc Rich is another diversionary tactic, in your opinion.

Sheesh maybe someday you will wake up to the realization to never beleive what the Clintons say on any issue.

Point: Marijuana is not this pie-in-the-sky wonderdrug that a very vocal addicted few make it out to be. It serves no legitimate purpose (unlike bacon double-cheese burgers [sic] and soda, which at the very least satisfies hunger and nourishes the body) and ought not be condoned by its legalization.

Interestingly enough, Hitler was also a vegetarian.

Hitler didn't drink and he didn't smoke

Hitler was also a drug addict(the pro-druggies never deny that either). Churchill on the other hand could throw down some Scotch.

I'll take Churchill over hitler anyday.

Your efforts to distract and divert are unsuccessful.

In other words Freedom4UsAll, holding his/her hands over his/her ears screaming, "lalalalalalalalalal".

Soda is nourishing? Also, you forgot the whole muchies thing in relation to chemo patients. Yes, I am aware that there are oral varients of THC. As has been pointed out, kinda hard to keep a pill down when you are puking up everything you have ever eaten. Smoking those same substances doesn't have that draw back. That is where they came up with the medical issue.

Lastly, if you were that up on the medical side of things, you would know that there are no psysically addictive properties to marijuana.

But it does serve a legitimate purpose, the same purpose served by whiskey - altered conscienceness. Whiskey is legal, you know, therefore a "legitimate" commodity. Do you want to ban whiskey?

Funny. Of all the documentaries. Of all the posts on the web. You are the first person to assert that Hitler was a druggie. I assume you have a link to some proof?

Ad hominem are the last resort of the ignorant

Me ignorant? I'm not the one begging everyone to let me take drugs please.......

I'm not the one who sees nothing wrong with allowing my entertainment to cost all Americans their hard earned cash for the increased cost by companies to control the damage done by those whose "entertainment" leads them to be unable to function.

I'm the one who will not allow alcohol or drugs or pot get control of my life. I will not allow it the chance because I'm not stupid enough to think that all other people that are addicted got that way from some unknown disease. I look at facts, I weigh the risk, I judge if I need alcohol. I don't have to judge if I need drugs because I will never take the first one - I don't see any fun in it. I don't see any gain from it.

It is disgusting. I frankly don't enjoy making a fool of myself. I like control of my actions.

If that is ignorance - I'm gladly ignorant.

By the way - remember - that exalted sense of your intelligence is probably a side effect of a chemical.

I don't have a link, but it is common knowledge that the heirarchy of the nazi's were big drug abusers.

Oh BTW, do you have a link saying that hitler was not a drug abuser?

Actually, Churchill was known to be a great lover of Brandy, just so we have our facts straight. The point is, he was a great leader, and liked to alter his state of mind from time to time. Are you against using intoxicants or just using illegal intoxicants?

I have a rather thick head, so the nasty little barbs don't bother me much.
You said a mouthfull there pal.

My, my, my! How clever!

You'll have to conduct a seminar to instruct others of the intricacies of such keyboard magic!

Sorry Dane. There is no such common knowledge. You made the assertion without proof. Cough it up or admit you just made it up.

Hitler was on several drugs.

These were prescribed (or mis-prescribed) by Dr. T. Morell, Hitler's personal physician. They were prescribed for a variety of symptoms--most of them related to fatigue, depression, and anxiety. The drugs included methamphetamine (speed) injected daily beginning in 1942. Cola-Dalmann tablets, containing a number of ingredients including caffeine, used daily since the 1930s. Brom-Nervacit, containing bromide, used sporadically since 1942. All of these drugs, except Cola-Dalmann, were started in 1942, after Hitler's tremor began.
