I assume Tony Blair chose his words very carefully today. Why did he say "Iraq poses a very real and unique threat"? What's "unique" about it? ----------------------------------------------------------- Main Entry: unique Pronunciation: yu-'nEk Function: adjective Etymology: French, from Latin unicus, from unus one -- more at ONE Date: 1602 1 : being the only one : SOLE 2 a : being without a like or equal : UNEQUALED b : distinctively characteristic : PECULIAR 1 3 : UNUSUAL ---------------------------------------------------------- We already have nations with nuclear weapons - the Soviets threatened us for years with theirs. They did the same with bilogical weapons. Nothing unique about these threats. What would be unique is giving terrorists WMDs for use against our civilzation and retaining plausible deniability. That's what this is all about.

His wording caught my eye too. It seems they have something very specific on Iraq.

I'm starting to think that they're going to focus on nuclear weapons. What will make this "unique" is that we'll be talking about relatively small nuclear bombs, delivered covertly, instead of large warheads on missiles. As we've discussed, these differences make deterrence based on MAD inapplicable, and preemption becomes the only option.

This will be convincing, just as Blair promises.
