The Serbian mass media report today that deputies of the parliament have submitted a draft “Declaration on the protection of the Cyrillic alphabet” for consideration of Skupstine. The initiative was caused by the fact that Roman letters are more frequently used in Serbia and Montenegro, which actively forces out the original Serbian written language: the Cyrillic alphabet.

The alphabet has a long history, one that is based in the Christian Faith. I see this attack on cyrillic as an attack on Eastern Christianity as well.

The Cyrillic alphabet devised by St. Cyril in the 10th century for the Slavs and it is based loosely on the Greek alphabet.

Cyril and Methodist two Orthodox Christian Missionary brothers, were sent on a mission by Photios, the Great, the Patriarch of Constantinople to the Slavs in order to bring Christianity to them.

The alphabet was written to help in the study of the Christian faith. The Serbian, Ukrainian, Russian Orthodox Churches use that alphabet as well as the old Slavonic language.

The missionaries were imprisoned on their way through western Europe because certain Germanic princes, who were loyal to the Roman Pope, did not want the Faith taught to the Slavs in Moravia. Geeze, Politics, is and was always some kind of weird problem!! Anyway....They were released after Photios made an appeal to Rome.

Both missionaries are considered Saints by the Roman and Eastern Orthodox Churches because of their impact in the spread of Christianity in Europe.

The battle for the preservation of Serbian Alphabet is lost!

Why?

I have learned to read end write both Latin and Serbian Cyrilic alphabet at the age 6-7 in primary school in Yugoslavia. It was a common norm at that time. But,somehow,I was always writing in Latin, espetially since the age of 10 when I was beggining to learn English in school! And,majority of my friends were the same.Till 1991 90% of Serbian press and books were printed in Latin Alphabet.Since 91 attempts were made to reintroduce Serbian Cyrilic Alphabet, again,to a certain extent but very few people cares about that.Serbs read easily both alphabets so there`s no problem. The problem is that I don`t want to throw away my IBM or Smith Corona typewriter(in latin) and by a knew one in Cyrilic!

Serbian Cyrilic alphabet is a wonderfull, and was introduced in mid 19th century by a Serbian scholar Vuk Karadzich! The beauty of it is that it is PHONETIC(one letter one voice) and the most economical alphabet in the world. It is different from Russian and other alphabets.But,computers,movies,etc.are in English and English language being a lingua franca of modern civilisation is slowly, pushing out other alphabets! That is reality!Introduction of foreign words in native language is normal. For instance,it is very cumbersome to explain computer terms or many technical terms in other language but English! So,you addopt them and they become a part of normal, contemporary language!

I wish the serbians Gods blessings as they battle the global forces who are intent on making them bow to islamic terrorist's.

Thanks for the kind comments!!

Since I have been assisting newly arrived Serbian refugees to the USA, I have seen so many Baptisms of their children and, in many cases, parents as well. I have attended many weddings and, sadly, a couple of funerals. This has been in just the past 4 1/2 years.

The community here is establishing a Church with well over 200 members....some former communists or simply, just un-churched people.

They have raised sizable amounts of money and are finalizing a land purchase. The plans are even drawn for the Church and the hall.

A Priest, visiting from Serbia, told me a few months ago that he has many new members of his congregation. He is an older Priest who lived through many of the dark years under communism and is quite happy with all the new members of his flock.

My Serbian friends here in the USA are very nice and I enjoy their company.

We had a new family arrive on Thursday. They are so shy and quiet...and so darn thin that I wanted to buy them HUGE MEAL right away!! They have had a rough time and both the husband and the wife have severe and painful dental/gum problems. They are both 30 years old.

Our agency has a group of dentists...one is even a Serbian-American, who will do the dental work for free.

There are many more Serbs on the way....we expect 6 more families before the end of September. I have been told to expect another 18 families by the end of the year.

The Serbs, while firmly Orthodox, have always served as a bridge between Eastern and Western Christianity. For example, St. Sava is also a Western saint, even though most Western Christians don't know that! And many of the historic churches in Kosovo (whether still standing or destroyed by the Shiptars) had both Eastern and Western architectural elements. Using both alphabets fits that pattern.

New World Order-based globalization is designed to destroy BOTH Eastern Orthodox and Western Catholic/Protestant culture, and to meld their faith into the One-World "religion"!!!! The Serbian people were hit first, but the rest of us are on the globalists' agenda as well, if we are not undermined from within already.

The Serbs need to be allowed to be who they are--whether they chose Vuk Karadzic's alphabet exclusively, or to use both alphabets.

All the best to you in your work to help settle Serbian refugees. In our area, the Serbian community is more well-established, and is assisting many new immigrants (many of whom are Bosnian and Kraijina Serbs) as well.

We had several families arrive in September. One family arrives on Friday. We had two families cancel out...one due to an illness and one because of some sort of paper work error. They will come on later...perhaps after the first of the year.

I think we will have only 14 families more by the end of 2002....but more are sure to come next year as well. Much family re-unification...mostly Serbs from camps in Serbia or Republic of Serbska
