Woman viciously attacked by pitbull; Dog attacked at least three other times

Bakersfield - An Oildale woman wants some answers as to why a vicious dog, with a history of assault wasn't restrained.

Charlotte Reintz says it took just seconds yesterday for a pitbull to attack her.

She says she's traumatized and wonders why something wasn't done about the dog that has apparently attacked, not once, not twice, but at least three previous times.

Reintz was viciously attacked by a pitbull on Belle Avenue in Oildale while walking to a friend's house Sunday.

"I put my shirt out like this and it just started biting my shirt to keep it from biting me any more and it seemed like forever before somebody came out there," said Reintz.

Her piercing screams sent neighbors rushing from their homes to rescue her.

"I got up to see what it was and we brought her here in the yard," said neighbor Kenneth Caudillo. "The guy next door helped get the dog off of her and we helped her call 911."

Neighbors say the traumatic assault should never have happened.

"This animal had a dangerous order placed on it in Sept. of 2001, after a couple of incidents which required the animal to be maintained within its yard on a tether not less than 12 feet," said Steve McCalley of Kern County Environmental Health. "Apparently it has not been maintained consistent with the dangerous order."

Now, Reintz is nursing wounds in her hands, legs, and chest area, but she says her injuries run deep.

Reintz says she can't comment on whether she'll pursue any type of legal action in light of the attack.

The dog will remain under quarantine at the animal shelter pending the outcome of the investigation.

The owner has five business days to appeal the quarantine order before the dog is put down.

I agree that owners are to blame a some of the time, but if it were 100% the fault of the owners, then Labs and Golden Retrievers should be at the top of the list because there are more of them than there are Pits and Rots. All breeds are not created equal.

"Our instructor, a nice, knowledgeable man, loves Rots. He has a Rot that HATES his wife, and his wife has one the HATES him."

If you didn't have an agenda, this paragraph would read more this way.

Our instructor, an ignorant, foolish man, loves Rots. But he is such a dunderhead that he has completely alienated his wifes' dog and his looney wife has completely alienated her husbands' dog. Once I noticed this, I aked for my money back and immediately sought somebody better qualified to help me train my Golden Retriever, because I am basically clueless about large animals and need the help.
I am not sure they should have anything larger than a neutered Chihuahua.

See what a difference an agenda makes?

What does it take to educate 'wackos' like you not to
jeopardize yourself, your family, neighbors, and curious
defenseless children?

Please don't tell me you live in the city with a Golden Retriever, are you making sure, he gets his 5 mile walk everyday?
If not, you are part of the problem.

My neighbor had a female pit bull/boxer mix who was the sweetest thing. One time I got an old towel and played tug of war with her over the fence. I was in awe of this dog's power - I held my end ( with both hands ) and she grabbed hers, sat back on her haunches and rip-rip-ripped that towel in half in about 1 minute ! She was about to pull me over the fence. Another day my big black male cat, Pluto, jumped their fence and entered the yard. The dog grabbed him and shook him some, literally scaring the crap out of him. But she didn't aggressively attack and kill him outright which is what I would have expected her to do. She had a loving owner and wasn't a killer. This dog was accustomed to her own cats in the family and didn't want any others in the yard, which is normal. Pluto was in HER yard. He's never jumped their fence again, and they moved two years ago!

The pit bull terrier is a common cause of urban dog bite injuries in children. The major problem is that they are frequently (94%) unprovoked. These dogs are also freely roaming animals (67%).

http://www.dog-bite-law-center.com/pgs/stats.html

Unfortunately, most pure breeds suffer in one way or another, whether it be health or temperment. It's clear that something has to be done to better the reputation of these dogs. Here's what I think should happen, but before I go into it, let me say that I love animals. I have a dog, and I had two cats until recently. We had to put our beloved cat down the beginning of this month. I still miss her terribly and still expect her to come around a corner insisting on a treat.

Those dogs brought in to breed rescues should be temperment tested, and put down if they do not pass the non-aggressive test. This goes for any breed. I am willing to believe that a few good dogs will suffer for every bad dog of the same breed that bites or kills a person.

Next, I think there should be tougher laws about breeding (i.e. puppy mills), and the pet shops that sell dogs keeping those horrible puppy mills in business. This won't take care of the "back yard breeders", but it's a start. There also should be greater incentive (or punishment) for not spaying or neutering your dog, though I don't know how to accomplish this.

Again, nice try. I don't live in the city, and my dog gets PLENTY of exercise. We have a big yard, and he gets walked at least 5 times a week, off lead, around our wooded community college. I walk between 2 and 3 miles, and I'm guessing he goes at least 6, with the way he runs back and forth. We also belong to a K-9 search and rescue team, so I am well aware of what good dog care is.

Why don't you try another blind shot? One of these times, you are bound to get lucky! ;-)

My point is, seems that you can't be educated. Your programming
got screwed up along the way. If you were a 'flat earth'
believer I might play along, but like a criminal you
are a danger to society.

He has such big horns and all, should he be in a bear cage too?

Yes, in fact they are kept in cages. Large cages. Outdoor cages. They are called fenced in pastures.

For those owners who don't walk their dogs "5 miles" every day (please post a link. I have not heard that recommendation), what should we do about it?

I'll make a deal with you, you don't trespass on my property and none of my dogs will ever get you.

That's kinda the problem isn't it? When animals escape their property and kill people.

And when someone is dead, they tend to stay that way. So if you "make a mistake" and my kid is dead, just who do I see about that?

I had a neighbor once who told the story about his earlier neighbor, the one with the two large vicious dogs. He asked the nieghbor if he was confident that the dogs would never get out and attack his children. The man said he was willing to bet his life on it, to which my neighbor responded, "Good, because you just did when you brought those dogs here".

Just a story, who knows if it is true or not. But it is irrelevant to me because I agree with the basic concept of it. Freedom comes with responsibility. Sometimes the ultimate responsibility.

read my earlier posts.
If the dog shows the slightest bit of aggression to people, it will be put down.
I am raising my Pit and Aussie to work and protect my livestock, nothing more, nothing less.
Oh I forgot to ask, is it okay if I have an Australian Shepherd?

I have.

Your dog will be put down by you. That is why I never mentioned you personally.

I am raising my Pit and Aussie to work and protect my livestock, nothing more, nothing less.

Goody, it has nothing to do with what I referred to.

Oh I forgot to ask, is it okay if I have an Australian Shepherd?

It's Ok by me, but it's not my call. If your shepard goes off your property and kills my child, it would be a large problem for us however.

Why do you have a shepard anyway? Do you mean to tell me that that dog can do the same job as a Pit Bull? No way! Don't you know that the only dogs that can be good pets are the large aggressive breeds that top the deadly attack list?

< /sarcasm>

Okay now that that is settled.
What exactly is your point?
Should all dogs you don't approve of disappear from the face of the earth?
Send me an approved list and I will try to accomodate you next time.

What exactly is your point?

Hard to imagine that you couldn't ascertain that from my many posts on this thread.

Should all dogs you don't approve of disappear from the face of the earth?

That's the second time you have tried to paint me as someone who thinks they should have final say on that. It won't work this time either.

It's a democratic republic. We elect people to make decisions on public safety. They decided long ago in most places that certain animals are too dangerous to be kept as pets. Lions, tigers, bears and the like. Certain dangerous dogs have been added in many places.

It is designed to head off attacks on innocent people and the animals owners by aggreived victims.

Send me an approved list and I will try to accomodate you next time.

Don't accomodate me, check your local ordinances.
