Bakersfield - An Oildale woman wants some answers as to why a vicious dog, with a history of assault wasn't restrained.

Charlotte Reintz says it took just seconds yesterday for a pitbull to attack her.

She says she's traumatized and wonders why something wasn't done about the dog that has apparently attacked, not once, not twice, but at least three previous times.

Reintz was viciously attacked by a pitbull on Belle Avenue in Oildale while walking to a friend's house Sunday.

"I put my shirt out like this and it just started biting my shirt to keep it from biting me any more and it seemed like forever before somebody came out there," said Reintz.

Her piercing screams sent neighbors rushing from their homes to rescue her.

"I got up to see what it was and we brought her here in the yard," said neighbor Kenneth Caudillo. "The guy next door helped get the dog off of her and we helped her call 911."

Neighbors say the traumatic assault should never have happened.

"This animal had a dangerous order placed on it in Sept. of 2001, after a couple of incidents which required the animal to be maintained within its yard on a tether not less than 12 feet," said Steve McCalley of Kern County Environmental Health. "Apparently it has not been maintained consistent with the dangerous order."

Now, Reintz is nursing wounds in her hands, legs, and chest area, but she says her injuries run deep.

Reintz says she can't comment on whether she'll pursue any type of legal action in light of the attack.

The dog will remain under quarantine at the animal shelter pending the outcome of the investigation.

The owner has five business days to appeal the quarantine order before the dog is put down.

Before Sir Spartacus (my Schnauzer) died, Ol'Sparky whipped up on several big dogs one of which was my brothers 150 lb Rottweiler. Sparky weighed approx. 15 lbs and was so ferocious towards my brothers dog that during the middle of the night his dog was so scared of Sparky that it ripped down my window shades trying to get out. My brother had to drive back to Tampa in the middle of the night because my 15lb Schnauzer had Terrified his dog so bad.

You are entitled to your opinion but any dog can bite & maim. I hate Chow's, they are mean uncooperative dogs that have a tendacy to bite the hand that feeds them, I would never own one. But that doesn't mean someone else shouldn't be able to.

For what it's worth, I've found that grabbing a misbehaving dog by the scruff of the neck does wonders. (Grabbing hard!) You'll notice this behavior from dominant dogs in a pack. The Alpha will correct other members of the pack this way. Grabbing the snout from the top has a similar effect.

I did something similar to this with a Chow, it ran at my kid growling & since I didn't have a stick I had to do something so I grabbed it by the scruff of the neck on each side of the head, lifted it off the ground & slammed it on it's back. Needless to say it didn't want any more of that, Thank goodness I was scared $hitless.

Your Schnauzer sounds just like mine, Missie does not put up with any crap from the pups. She is already 13 and probably won't be with us much longer, one of the best dogs I have ever had.

I'll tell you another thing about Ol'Sparky, he would kill a rat in a heartbeat. When we first moved to Georgia, the place I bought was quite run down & had several chicken houses that were no longer any good. I picked up peice of tin sheeting and upset a nest of rats, Sparky killed 9 rats in less than in a minute. That's no lie, he kept the Rat poplulation down. I miss the little joker.
If you do some research on Minature Schnauzers you will find that one of the reasons they were bred was specifically for catching rats.

Do you have any experience with the Carolina dog?
I was reading about them on a thread here and was a bit curious about them, sounds like an excellent ranch dog.

You ain't lying and they are very proficient at it.
Our first Schnauzer, Spuds, was a rat/mouse catching dude. He could outperform our Manx cat, which wasn't easy to do.
They brought there catch home and put them on the driveway, it looked like a killing field.
How is the coyote population in your parts?

No i'm not familiar with them, but my Grand Daddy alway's had a Collie or Austrailian Sheppards to help with his livestock. The Austrailian Sheppards are very smart & can be very aggressive to.

The Coyote population is thriving in South Georgia, they make the most eerie sound you've ever heard. They sound more like a pack of ghosts than dog like animals and they can & will kill a small calf if given the opportunity.

I live in an urban area and my pit bull does fine. You have to be a responsible owner though (that's what's missing in this story). My dog is trained not to leave the yard when he's off leash and he's always under supervision and voice control on top of that. When we leave the yard he's on leash, even though he will heel and not run off. The problem isn't him but other people - people who let their kids run up to him (he's afraid of kids, strangely enough) and people who let their dogs run up to him (tempting fate - he's not real friendly with most dogs, and it wouldn't be my fault if I have him leashed).

We have an Aussie we got when she was 9 days old, we bottle fed the little thing and she is now a quite healthy little 11 week old pup.
She is already starting to herd the chickens, it is fun to watch her work.
The Pit is exactly one week older and they get along great. We think she will teach him stealth and he will teach her brute force, they should be an awesome combination.

They are plentiful here in East Texas also.
We have some bottomland and they use the creek as a freeway.
Something did get the end of the tail of one of my heifers, don't know if it was coyote or dog or even a big cat. Our neighbor lost a full grown cow to a cat last year.

Thank you austingirl. Yes, they are idiots. I will support and stand by police elsewhere...but not here. Killing the dog wasn't all either. When I became hysterical they took me to the emergency room of the yucky County Hospital (Highland) and then early the next morning some men came and took me to a MENTAL HOSPITAL!!! I got sprung after the psychiatrists realized I wasn't "crazy" but the whole thing is an experience I am not likely to forget about until I can move away from here to (hopefully) a sane place.
