I believe we are in the 21st century, things change.

Sadly, these crimes happen very often. But, when the parents of public school students murder their children, we never hear: "A public schooler murdered her children." Exactly.
Correlation and causation are not the same thing. But what the hell, any stick to beat the competitors to the government children's penitentiaries will do.

I have to admit I have been pretty much just watching this debate understanding basically where both sides are coming from. But I have to say, GED mothers can do just as good as public school teachers if not better in some cases. And I raised my eyebrow at the remark;
"When mothers with a GED insist on home schooling their kids I get pretty worked up."
Let me explain, First the GED is a standard set by public school curriculums. I home school. My daughter wants to join the armed forces when she is finished with her home schooling. Now here is where the flaws in that statement come out, in order for my daughter to join the service she may have to take the GED in order to be accepted. This in no way means she is less intelligent. So what happens when she wants to home school her children? (assuming she does not attend college) this means she will be home schooling mother with a G.E.D.
~Also many people who I know have taken this very same test are no less intelligent or any less equipped to teach children that public school teachers. Heck, some public school teachers aren't even certified. And some of the certified public school teachers are incompetent compared to GED home schooling mothers/fathers. And yes some Home schooling parents with real high school diplomas may be less prepared than some uncertified teachers.
My point is this, judging someone's ability to home school based on a GED, high school diploma, or because they don't have some formal training that someone else thinks is a requirement is wrong. Most home school parents, regardless of how they completed school have not been formally trained in educational techniques. This does not make them less capable. Home schooled children, with their testing scores (I think) prove this.
Joe, I agree that high school drop outs that never continued or finished their schooling shouldn't teach. But A GED is not something that should bar someone from teaching their own children. Isn't passing the G.E.D. proof that you have passed the basic requirements of public school 1st thru 12th grade?

Here's another case where homeschooling went bad:
http://msnbc.com/local/WEWS/A1300975.asp?0bl=-0
In this case the family decided to pull their kids out of school to homeschool them. When one of the girls was 15, she was forced to be inseminated with her stepfather's sperm to produce a child for her mother and stepfather. She was isolated from the world.
"The girl testified at her mother's trial that her stepfather had threatened her with a gun if she didn't agree to have his child.
She testified again Monday about years of alleged physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her stepfather.
She said that she was pulled out of school in the fifth grade to be home-schooled, but that she wasn't taught much at home."
If the people doing the homeschooling are bad (and there are lots of bad people out there), then it's going to be a bad experience.
I'm not anti-homeschooling. Our kids were homeschooled for several years. They insisted on going to school and they are enjoying school also. We are friends with the teachers, who are great. Homeschooling vs. formal schooling is not a good/evil choice. You can find both good and bad on both sides.

"I knew from the moment I heard that Andrea Yates homeschooled that the press would make it an issue." I know, I remember when I first heard she had home schooled, I shook my head and thought "here we go..."

To a point. And finding that point will be tougher than finding a needle in 100 haystacks. The lines that divide parental authority and government authority are fought over like a skirmish line between armies of equal strength.

What school district is this in? In Massachusetts the average is around $60k. The whole thing is a scam.
To: CholeraJoe
It won't be long and there will be as many homeschool related deaths as there are D&D related deaths. I do both D&D and homeschooling so my kids are probably doomed to 1/1000000 chances of death per decade.
To: CholeraJoe
Okay, so this is the second set of kids that I'm aware of who were home-schooled that were killed by their mom. How many that are NOT home-schooled were killed by their moms? A lot more, I'm sure.

This one is easy, the line is where the childs education is deficient, when measured above a certain % of his peers...

CORRECTION;
"~Also many people who I know have taken this very same test are no less intelligent or any less equipped to teach children that public school teachers"
I meant to say; "any less equipped to teach children than some public school teachers"

**This one is easy, the line is where the childs education is deficient, when measured above a certain % of his peers...**
Cool. My daughter tested at the 97% for math. Reading and grammar was 82%...national standards. :o)

This one is easy, the line is where the childs education is deficient, when measured above a certain % of his peers... Guess again friend. Who's doing the measuring and by what standard are they measuring. Maybe we should use a standardized test put together by homeschoolers, that requires all public school kids to be homeschooled if they fail to meet minimum standards.

The "Another Homeschool mom murders her children" section of that header what added by the person who posted the article here at FR...

"Just like Andrea Yates"
So in other words, she was mentally ill and couldn't handle it. So, lets either put her on death row, or sterlize her and put her in a mental institution for the rest of her life.

Very good point, MissMillie. The actual article title is as read above. Cholera Joe chose to make a derogatory point about homeschooling.

"I so amazed that it took 136 posts to bring forth an ad hominem attack."
Do you always have this kind of tough luck fishing for trout as well?
To: CholeraJoe
