Perhaps the main home was too small, so the parents slept in an outside trailer. When I was a little girl my sisters and I shared the 2 very small bedrooms in the home. My parents slept on a rollaway bed in the living room. In the morning they'd fold it up and roll it into one of the bedrooms.

**that couldn't have been the ONLY issue in that household**
As the case unfolds I'm sure we'll learn more. Until then, the media has to beat up on the homeschool community at large. :o/

The smartest and best looking guys were in the Air Force. LOL!! True! That's why they need to have Tom Cruise portray them in movies.
In real life that shrimpy girly-man would be spanking frank in the barracks wondering why Kelly McGillis is banging the buffed out soldier from the neighboring Army base.
Just kidding (sort of), thanks for your service.

Corin, it's so refreshing to see your humor at play. Well, you know me. I never miss an opportunity to be a smart-@$$.
The problem here is not homeschool vs. public school, but another deranged woman. My comment about shooting him was tongue in cheek (and some obviously missed that). But supposedly, her argument was with him, not the kids.
There's more to this story that we're not seeing.
To: Aggie Mama
Sounds like you live in one of the rare areas where the schools are worthwhile. :o)
To: CholeraJoe
They had attended public school for one week prior to their murders. That would make them public schoolers.
To: AAABEST
That's why they need to have Tom Cruise portray them in movies. Cruise played a Navy flyboy. Real fliers need lots of runway. Oh and square miles of missle silos.

We are down to the last two. I know what you meant. But with this thread, that was unfortunate phrasing...
To: Tired of Taxes
No, she was not a home schooler, she was a former homeschooler. Her kids were currently enrolled in the public school, against her husband's wishes. Sounds to me like a controlling husband, a lunatic wife and the kids are the victim of both.

So one week in Public school erases 8+ years (in the case of the 14 year old) of home schooling? I knew home schooling was worthless. /sarcasm

**NUTS, STUPID PEOPLE, and PEOPLE WHO LACK SUFFICIENT PATIENCE should not homeschool their children. period. **
The same could be said for teachers in public and private education. Homeschooling is a calling. If you're not 'called', you shouldn't be doing it.
To: homeschool mama
that is very true, but hopefully if one is employed as a teacher there is a review process and some accountability as to your failings as a teacher (more so in private ed. than public, i realize) but as a parent, who is overseeing the wackos and stupid people who are homeschooling their kids?

We live next to the high school our daughter will never attend. Instead, we plan to drive 30 miles one way to the private school of choice.

If you're not 'called', you shouldn't be doing it. It's very refreshing to hear that from someone called "homeschool mama."

I didn't choose sides. I didn't anticipate what we came to discover (or at least perceive), to be fair. In theory, it would seem that children with a stay-at-home mom would be more shy, and perhaps even better behaved than their working mom counterparts' children. But that's not at all what we experience. We have about 15 children on an average Sunday. The same 4-6 children that are the most aggressive, least disciplined, and least willing to accept discipline come from stay-at-home-mom families. Is it just coincidence? I dunno, maybe. I will also say that these particular children are extremely intelligent, considerably further along cognitively, yet remain the most rowdy and aggressive in a group setting.

**Just because some national Home School organizations are based in your area, does not make you guys the center of the universe. **
Thank you.

Teachers make roughly 50 Grand a yearBS. My wife just completed her masters and passed a certification exam for a diagnostician's position. If she switched to that position this year (which would entail almost a 20% raise), even with 13 years of experience, she would still not make 50 grand, in a school district that pays better than average in Texas.
plus benefits to work 180 days over a 9 moth period
The benefits are actually getting worse and worse each year. And while I will agree with you that starting teachers make a great deal for the amount of time, the actual time off during the year is more like 7 weeks during the summer, 2 weeks during Christmas, a week for spring break, and about another week of other holidays mixed in for a total of 11 weeks. If I had 13 years at my firm, I'd get 4 weeks of vacation plus another week and a half of holidays/personal days -- roughly half of the time. The fact is that first through third (or so) year teachers are fairly well paid (in Texas) but after that, the raises don't go very far.
Now, with all that said, I'm a big fan of home schooling and will probably do it with our kid(s). But let's keep our comments factually based, please.

So they were public school kids who were murdered. The solution is obvious - end public schooling.
To: mikhailovich
And the ratio is....?
The homeschool group I lead has over 70 children in it. Every single field trip we had in the last school year (numbering 16) resulted in praises from the businesses we visited. They said our children were the most well behaved group visiting their establishments.
Sounds like you have an anti homeschool attitude based on ignorance...and grouping a few bratty kiddos into the entire homeschool community. tsktsktsk
