Blues it is no mere coincidence that most of the griping about illegal immigrants comes from California, the welfare Mecca of the nation.

Tell me about it. I live there. And yet you suggest to those kvetchers that maybe it's time to end the welfare state (federal and state, either one), you bump into what George Will isolated long enough ago (it is still true, alas): Today's "conservative" has reached into his heart of hearts, prayed hard, and decided it was high time that the government cut his neighbour's benefits.

The amazing thing is how well everyday life in California works despite the best efforts of government. Of course, with the nutballs in the legislature and with Grey Davis in a rather desperate mode, things might unravel a bit for the longer term. Some weird anti business and anti productivity stuff is seemingly gaining traction. Previously it was all amusing cultural welfare noise with no real significance. Going forward, it may be less amusing.

Texas has one of the nation's fastest-growing Middle Eastern populations, and most of the state's immigrants live in Houston, according to a study based on census data. Researchers at the Center for Immigration Studies say Texas' Middle Eastern population more than doubled in the last decade, to just over 100,000, including more than 52,000 in Greater Houston.
