It's not difficult to catch illegals. Most in California either have fake ID that can be checked and found to be false by any LEO withing minutes. Many carry that funky bogus matricula consular card issued by the corrupt Mexican government, a dead giveaway. Anybody carrying one of those ought to be arrested on the spot. Then simply deport them immediately and seize their assets. Period.

I love the INS raids. The white pickups and cars come roaring into the yard and someone yells "Immigracion!". Half of the workers take off running, jumping fences, crawling through culverts, hiding in the woods. The fat INS agents go chugging after them. After awhile the red faced and panting agents come dragging back with the ones they "caught" in tow. Turns out they all are legal.

Meanwhile the Mexicans who stayed behind have kind of drifted off and can't be found. Happens every time. It's quite a show.

Uh, if they are legal, why would they run?

Interesting, from my knowledge, they usually know who they are looking for before they even show up...

So all these that run are legal and are just being decoys...And this happens everytime? Boy they are well organized....To bad the INS isn't.....

While the majority of California hispanics are US citizens over 90% are illegal aliens or the progeny of illegal aliens.

Is that something you can back with documentation? The math could get pretty tricky--geometric progresion.

It isn't anything new, to have a significant hispanic/immigrant component of population, in Calif., Texas, New Mexico, Arizona.

As a 54 yo California native, I've never had a choice, and it doesn't particularly bother me, day to day. I don't "speak" Spanish, and don't need to.

I can understand whereby folks, when it comes to your town/state, will fairly well freak out.

Mexican-Americans have served in times of war, for America, in numbers disproportionately larger than their percent of population. I have several friends in that category, and it is impossible for me to broadly disrespect people I've known most of my life, who have served their country, even if their mom or dad or both were "wetbacks," to use an earlier term.

By your statistical comment, if my veteran buddies' parents were wetbacks, then their children and grandchildren would be the "progeny" which you reference.

Anybody out there know how one distinguished an illegal vs. legal immigrant, in the 1840s through 1870s?

My comments are not intended to make light of, or diminish the illegal immigration issues, faced by America. At a policy level, I have always believed we should have a much more secure border.

At a personal level, I can't be angry with other people (and their progeny), trying to better themselves. I have many friends and relatives who have intermarried with hispanic people. That is true, for many people in the Southwest and California, including the Bush family.

If I was in charge of the INS, I'd put the priority on identifying muslim terrorists.

Nope. In my part of the country they sweep the hotels, farms and construction sites annually. They start early but the grapevine tracks them. It's a holiday.

Incidently I learned that little trick at Arrowhead Farms. From Barry Goldwater.

So when they do a sweep, all the legal one's run and are decoys and the illegals just kinda stand around. In a sweep, you would think they would check those standing around too. Oh well, go figure, it's just a game that's being played, as the fedgov in not serious about deporting the millions anyway...It makes it look good.......

They are focused and determined to take back the Southwest which their children believe belongs to them.

I can't help but to shake my head whenever I hear Mexicans get all riled up about losing what is now the southwest part of the United States as a result of the U.S.-Mexican War. The country of Mexico had control over that parcel of land from 1821-1848, a span of only 28 years. I have neckties that I've owned longer than 28 years! Not only that, but when Mexico had control over this parcel of land, it was sparsely populated and largely undeveloped. I think that the main reason that Mexicans want this land back might have something to do with the fact that us Americans have made a few improvements to it, such as modern cities with tall office buildings, roads and freeways, bridges and dams, nice housing developments, shopping malls, schools, parks, and hundreds of thousands of thriving, successful businesses. I wonder if Mexicans would still be throwing a hissy fit about wanting this land back if it was still sparsely populated and largely undeveloped like it was back in 1848?

It appears that within twenty years, that may become reality. Look at the trends.

You nailed that gist of the reason why many Mexicans want the American southwest.
