President Bush will appear at two private fund-raising events for California gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon today, but he will not share the stage with the aspiring politician when he addresses Hispanic community leaders in Santa Ana, just south of Los Angeles.

This, in and of itself is not a campaign killer, but when combined with the rest, it weakens a already weak campaign.
Yah, he could have paid the SOB off and had him sign a non-disclosure agreement. That is a idea but my guess is that Davis would have found out and publicised it. He should have aired it prior to court. Now that might have worked. But wait! He has no way to do that because of lousey media access.
Oh well!
Isn't the POTUSA regarded as the leader of his respective party? Isn't he obligated to support all official candidates (outrights crazies, e.g. David Duke, excepted)?
IAE, I don't think Bush is boldly sending a message; he's just being a wishy washy coward, same as his dad. (Yeah, he's brave about sending missles from 10,000 miles away -- as was Slick.)
I voted for Simon, even though I don't much like him. But I like Bush even less. If Bush can't support Simon in '02, that's one more reason for me not to support Bush in '04.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
Yup--it's nearly flawless, but only because he hasn't DONE anything important, and thus has had little opportunity to make the big mistakes. And in spite of not having that opportunity, he managed to make one that's a campaign-killer. Only the fact that he is lucky enough to running against an incompetent jackass like Gray Davis is keeping this campaign afloat.
I dont know where you get off calling him an incompetent bozo.
Maybe he isn't incompetent.
But he sure acts like he's incompetent.
His only mistake thus far has been this fraud case judgment against his company, not against him that was instigated by Governor Davis as a dirty trick.
He owns the company. He damn well knew it was coming down. He did nothing to prepare for it.
Simon may still win the election, but only if Davis snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.
BTW, you'd think we'd've learned something from Jerry BROWN and GRAY Davis--do not elect someone to the office of governor if the guy has a color (and a drab color at that) in his name :o)
This is the stuff that is killing Simon and there is reams of it. Who can you blame for this?
The fact is, the President was sandbagged by a gubernatorial candidate to whom he promised his support. Now he's supposed to just go in and campaign as if nothing happened? What if there's something else in Simon's past that's somewhat embarrassing. The Democrats would be all over themselves with glee.
You don't surprise the President of the United States. Simon did just that, and put Bush in a difficult position. I hope Simon can come back. I doubt it, however.
Calling Bush a coward does nothing to buttress your argument, or lack thereof, by the way.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
You must campaign early and often and everywhere -- including in media you control: talk radio, the internet, and use public access cable TV!
Why is it that conservatives shun public access cable TV? Anyone can use this medium for the asking. Liberals, libertarians, Christians, New Agers, showbiz wannabes, even some racists, ask. But I don't see any conservatives on my public access cable TV channel.
I am hoping against hope that the GOP will nominate someone other than Bush in 2004.
I suppose that's correct, but where do you have evidence that any person in this discussion does "shady crooked deals"?
If you are talking about the Pacific Coin verdict against the Simon Firm, making such sweeping statements you must be an expert on the particluars of this case and you didn't get your info from the front page of the biased LA TIMES.
So do tell, what portion of the judges instructions were completely diregarded by this jury? hmmmmm? How many of the allegations against the Simons did the judge rule that the plaintiffs didn't even come close to making their case within the bounds of the law hmmm??
When the judge tosses this verdict next month, declaring it completely out of the bounds of his instructions to the jury, I suppose we'll be hearing from you with a big apology to the Simon family for defaming them out of shear ignorance.
Until then go ahead and blame them for the flooding in Europe this month, the Boar War, and the Bubonic Plague. There's no evidence they had any role in any of that, but since you are siding with that jury then you don't need any evidence to come up with your verdict.
"Life's hard. It's even harder if you're stupid."
Gray Davis is the weekest candidate the Democrats have had to support in CA since Brown, and have failed terribly in this one.
One more non supporter in California is not much of a surprise. I think someone said earlier that the dems are holding back the big bombs for last. I think they may be right. Bush does not want any photo ops with Simon and that is clear. There could be multiple reasons.
His support in California is weak and Rudy will be alot more effective. Why take the chance on a risky candidate at best? I got to take section's side on this. I think the worst is yet to come. As if the present isn't bad enough.
No matter how bad it looks, Simon is our only choice now. Let's follow Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment, at least until mid-November... and THEN we can talk about the utterly senselessness of this wasted opportunity... or we can dance in the streets after yet another one of the most damaging liberals is evicted from office. Let's get off our butts and do something positive here, people. If Simon doesn't have the money to put out ads until November, then we need to get some positive pro-Simon messages out there ourselves, early and often, until his campaign can afford to take over. If not, then we are merely allowing a Clintonesque, egomaniacal, criminal, inept, destructive, freedom-hating hustler STAY in office, after a prime opportunity to unseat him, and we'll only have ourselves to blame. Now, get to work!
Some ten years ago, National Review wrote that Bush Sr. was a gentleman with sincere respect and civility for all groups except one: conservatives. And the same might be true of Bush Jr.
Remember "Read my hips."? That was the salt in the wound, the finger to the Right. Even if Bush Sr. had to cave on the tax increase, there was no reason to toss an insult afterwards.
And to those Bushies annoyed by my use of the terms Bush Sr. and Bush Jr., well, tough.
You must buy the line that Bush is evil and incompetent because he accepted campaign contributions from Enron.
Rove's advice from the very beginning has been virtually indistinguishable from what one would expect from a DNC plant (not to suggest that he IS one). He appears determined to limit Dubya's tenure to one term. I despise the POS intensely.
