This is a vanity post, let's get that straight from the start.
Perhaps the most vain aspect of it is the conceit that it might stay on topic, but I'm going to give it a whirl.
One of the more contentious species of threads encountered on Free Republic are those dealing with the subject of America's immigration policy, particularly with regard to the Illegal Aliens currently in our country. According a range of reasonable sources, the estimates of their numbers here currently here range from six to thirteen million. Whatever the actual count, there are quite a few people now in violation of American immigration law.
One subtopic that inevitably arises is the question of Amnesty:
Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?
That's the question I'd like to put forward to the members of Free Republic.
Almost as inevitably on threads dealing with this subject, flame wars erupt. It's not my purpose to instigate another round of that, they're rather predictable. So I'd like to ask that your comments, if you're inclined to share them, focus on the big picture of American immigration policy, with particular attention to the subject of Amnesty. I'm not interested in the stock and gratuitous divisiveness of race-baiting or referring to the President as "Jorge," or anything of that nature from any quarter. It achieves nothing, it's sulphurous methane heat with no light shed.
I'd also like to avoid ad hominem ambushes. I'm genuinely interested in learning the collective feelings of Free Republic members on this subject. If you're gonna post, I'd like to ask that you ante up with your opinion on the question at hand before engaging the discussion with others. No taking potshots from the obscurity of the sidelines. I'll post my opinion below at #1.
Fair enough?
So, once again, here's the question:
Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?
Diversity for diversity sakes is perverse.
It's only not practical because you DON'T want the problem to be fixed. Hey, you may be benefitting from the invasion.
Illegal activity should not be honored/rewarded.
So that's where the passion in your writing comes from Johnny? :-}
What really gets me is that I know that many of these open borders advocates will change their mind in the future when the situation becomes unbearable. Right now, there are still places where AMericans can flee to avoid the effects of the total disregard of American Sovereignty. In fact, many of the illegal sympathy individuals live away from the problem, either benefit economically from illegal immigration, are an illegal, have family members or friends who are illegal, or are completely blinded by political correctness.
I find it selfish for people to wish to subject future Americans to this insanity. Are future Americans not deemed important? Are Illegal Aliens more important than a great culture, less chaos, less bickering, and free America. Do these people wish to subject future Americans to a balkanized, third world, poor country with an elite with a large underclass? Furthermore, I wonder the same thing about the free traders.
I get the feeling that a lot of people do not think beyond the short term. That kind of thinking is fatal, and I can't believe that so many people can be so misguided and apathetic to this American tragedy. There is no good that can come out of an amnesty. We have to reform immigration policy and deport illegals. It has to happen. At least one or the other, we have to get a hold of the situation.
Lastly, do you ever get the feeling that the "open borders advocates" don't wish to have the problem solved and, thus, they claim that deportation isn't a workable solution?
Send 'em back to where they came from and put them at the back of the line if they deem to reapply for citizenship via the legal route.
Send all bills to their country of origin for all services rendered to them here. Give the country 2 months to pay the bill. Any delinquency of payment will be deducted from their foreign aid allotment!
Change the law that grants citizenship to babies born to non-citizens. This grant of citizenship is a welcome one for the illegals but, consider the dilema of Canadians who must come across the border for specialized OB/GYN services not avaliable in their country. Upon return to Canada they have to wrangle through a legal process to get their kids declared Canadian citizens!
They're tyrannical, and it is time people stood up to these dirt bags.
