Totally unsolicited advice but - cut back the chow. It will work for the little sweetie. Tough love sorta thing. We've got one that's in the same predicament, and it is my fault. Good luck with it. ;-)

The problem is, this is the first dog I have had that LOVES dog food! He gets very few hand-outs, maybe an egg once in awhile. I know that for dachshunds too much weight is very bad for their back. He would be much heavier if we allowed him to eat more than we do. I guess it is a trait of doxie's to love their food. It's just so hard when he looks at me with that "I'm starving" look in his eyes. :-(

;-) Trust me - I know TheLook. "Daddy if you don't feed me more I'll just waste away." You must be more strong, you will to have a happy, healthy poochie, and ignore these pitiful looks.

After all, they do have the snap of a four year old - and those guys can be very compelling.

You are the adult - they are the pinheads. Do what you need, and poochie, needs for you to do. ;-)
