In 1865 General Sherman and Sec of State Stanton(?), met with leaders of the black community in Savannah. After discussions with them Sherman (March to the Sea/Sherman) issued a 'field' order setting aside the Sea Islands and a a 30-40 mile strip of land near Charleston for blacks who wanted to settle on the land. They were given approx. 40 acres and an army issued mule! Lincoln signed off on the plan. The Freedman's Bureau later became the overseer of this land. In the fall of 1865, (Lincoln was assasinated in the spring of the same year), President Johnson issued pardons to the confederates who owned the land and issued an executive order that the lands be returned to their previous owners.

Perhaps you can help confirm/deny something for me.

I had a chance conversation with a gentleman in a park, who just wanted someone to talk with. The topic about those ex-slaves that had received those 40 acres of reparations after the Civl War came up. The gentleman claimed Lady Bird Johnson's father had swindled a lot of African-Americans out of that land and had made himself rich that way.

Any truth to that? Or was this gentleman not playing with a full deck? (BTW, I never sae him again.)

Being from TX, I believe that LBJ's dad was a farmer and that LBJ went to Sam Houston St. Teachers College and became a teacher (No wealth there!) Later he met and married lady Bird who was from a wealthy family. She was a great business woman who owned a TV station in Austin. She was the 'money' of that family. He was the politican.

The land wasn't available to be swindled since it was turned back to the original landowners in 1865-66. The guy must not have been playing wth a full deck!, or was just a LBJ-basher. There are plenty of those around and his persona gave ample fodder for many tales....

Thanks. I was a weird encounter.

My husband was at conference in Monterey, CA. I took a nice walk down to Fisherman's Wharf and bought an ice cream cone, feeding th cone part to the birds. This tan, bald older gentleman in a turtle-neck and sports jackets strikes up a conversation about those birds being like people on welfare. Then tells me story of Lady Bird.

When he's finished, he gave me some hard candy (I took it to be polite), then disappeared. I know what your mother says about taking candy from strangers (thought I was in my 30s then). I never ate the candy.

Chalk this up for another urban legend or story of what happens when stangers give you candy.

what I really 'enjoyed' was the Stars and Stripes in the colors of the African flag. That just really warmed my heart.< /sarcasm>

Yeah, Bill - that one was a jewel! I wonder if reparations calls for changing the current flag to that one?

Supercat, good point. Ol' Glory flew over the slave trade for years and made many a Yankee rich. In that sense, those people are correct - they make no distinction between Americans involved in the slave trade.

Plus, nobody in the CSA is going to listen to their reparations case right now....Congress is out at the moment : )

And also to showcase certain items. There might be one picture forthcoming of the woman wearing the "Kill Whitey" shirt.

And yet they still have their white supporters. Unbelievable.
