Two Turkish women look at Islamic bathing suits in a shop in Istanbul, Turkey, in this Aug. 9, 2002 photo. Islamic bathing suits fit loosely so as not to show off the outlines of women's body and are made of a synthetic material that dries quickly. The overwhelming majority of women at beaches in secular Turkey wear western-style bathing suits. (AP Photo/Osman Orsal)

Thank you for pointing out the obvious, Bella. Now maybe one of you bright bulbs can explain what the motive for posting this picture was. I assure you that it wasn't done to foster the rights or dignity of Islamic women. Why post this picture? Probably because Islam and all things Islamic are at this moment front and center of all of our lives. But, they put themselves there. They've boldly told us they want our complete and total destruction. They told us they want to bomb us, poison us, burn us, nuke us. They laughed and danced with glee at people jumping out of the WTC. Ah yes, they were dressed rather modestly while they danced...
And no, I don't think this planned death and destruction is done to foster the rights and dignity of Western women.

If this picture had been of Hassidic women,Amish/Mennonite ladies or other Christian ladies, I don't think there would have been so many snide comments. Well, there have been "Caption this" threads featuring pictures of Amish and Hasidic Jews (I have posted some of them myself) and most of the captions were innocent fun and not offensive in any way. I am Hasidic myself, and even though we value female modesty we are not so tight about it that we can't find any humor in it.
I think that if neck-to-knees swimming outfits were available in the U.S., you would find that a lot of American women might prefer them, not only out of modesty, but because many women whose figures do not quite come up to the "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit" ideal would feel more comfortable in them.

Thanks for the ping.

"...allows these women no alternative but compliance. No - there is an alternative. They could be non-compliant and die.
Ok, so it's not a great alternative - not even really a viable alternative - but it is an alternative.

Actually there are swimsuits that allow for a tan under the suits.
I believe that Lands End has been selling them for years.

"I hope you noticed my moniker. You don't know me and I don't know you, and I could care less whether you think my posts are silly or not."Didn't say you did. Was just trying to be helpful. I suppose I'll have to do a search for your name before I go looking for a laugh on FR from now on. You can suck all the fun out of thread faster than a Hoover on steroids;^)

Your prejudice and bigotry is showing. These women are Turkish. Turkey is a democratic country. Turkey is a member of NATO. NATO uananimously voted to invoke Article 5 of its charter. It is providing a base for the invasion of Iraq. You cannot determine whether these Turkish women seek the destruction of the US or cheered the destruction of the WTC. Therefore, you are taking a big leap. You are assuming that because they appear to be religious that they are Islamists. I suppose you would advoate interring Germans living in the US during WWI and Japanese-born Americans during WWII.

"I guess folks on this thread think their modesty is a laughing matter."Yeah... and so? Whats your point? hehe..is this a great country or what?

So you enjoy ridiculing others, do you? No that makes a lot of sense. And what was the point of your post?
Your grandmother or great-grandmother probably wore something very similar
Now, do you really think so? Or are you just enjoying ridiculing others?
Not a very independent mind, IMO.

I think some of the comments went over the line.

I'm well aware that these women are Turkish, and that Turkey is an ally. I'm talking about religion here, not nationality. Islam has declared itself an enemy of the West. We'd better pay attention.

My comment: "I guess folks on this thread think their modesty is a laughing matter."
Your reply "Yeah... and so? Whats your point? hehe..is this a great country or what?"
Your reply is so illuminating and insightful. You need to repeat it to the multitudes. Modesty really is stupid and vile.
Gangsta rap talks about the mutilation of women. Child porn leads to the molestation, abuse and murder of children. We permit gansta rap and child porn. I guess that makes this a great country!

You are assuming that all Muslims seek the destruction of the West. Should we kill all Muslims? Is their modesty something to deride? Is modesty laughable simply because it is practiced by Muslims?
To: Don'tMessWithTexas
Please see my post #86. Yes, I do think that modesty is a good thing, by the way. I lived in Istanbul for a while, and to be modest, women, Turkish or otherwise, need not wear potato sacks to the beach.

From the article:
"Dolek said some of his customers are secular Turkish women, who apparently take off the removable Islamic headscarves and wear the suits because they're embarrassed to show their bodies on the beach.
"Bathing suits don't have a religion," Dolek said. "Just like some women want to wear bikinis, others want to wear Hasema ... whatever the reasons may be."
'Nuff said.

All Muslims seek its CONVERSION, or, as failsafe, destruction as a superior power, to make room for muslims.
Yes, we should mock the dress and habits of fundamentalist muslim women; not so much for the dress but for the cultural backwardness that inspires it.
Women should never bow down to the idea that if they are not invisible, chaos will reign.

I hope that my sense of humor is a bit too sophisticated...ROFLMAO!!!!! **Gasp, gasp - trying to catch breath in middle of hysterical laughter** YOUR sense of humor?!?!? WHAT sense of humor, pray tell? Good grief, relax a bit and don't be so anal!! (And here I though I was the only truly anal-retentive person around! Silly me!)
