And it is a lousy way to talk. I've brought it up -- told folks they could use better language -- a few times -- takes some assertiveness and daring to do so, one might think, but actually the response I've gotten so far is sheepish -- they get embarassed and stop. For awhile at least. I remember reading something about the education of Harry Truman as a young boy in Independence, Missouri. Even out there, which is hardly a centre of cosmopolitanism, he got an education involving Latin and classical music. Similarly, working class people in Britain made use of libraries in order to improve their grammar and education. Ignorance, poor use of English, and rudeness is not the destiny of a particular class - it is a choice that people make.

Are you referring to Ann Coulter's book "Slander"? Indeed. My sister smuggled it in from America for my birthday in July. ;)
I've read it through, it's brilliant.

In regard to the subject of this thread, reparations. I actually learned something by watching c-span today.
I discovered that contrary to my original belief that the people behind this movement at least believed that they were engaged in a legitimate purpose, I discovered to my horror that they only want money!
These peoples ancestors, (mentioned ad-nauseum) would be rolling in their graves to discover that their progeny is refusing to take the opportunities provided under a free society and obtain a job, nurture a career and family and proudy live as a free American. (a opportunity denied to these ancestors)
These protesters believe and said it out right that they are not going to work and to hell with 9-5 bullcrap. They are going to wait for a check from whitey.
Go figure????????????????????????

MadIvan, have one of these for me next time you are in your favorite pub.I've enjoyed your comentary today.

I have to laugh - to hear all the crap Worrell spewed out prior to this thing, you'd think it was the second coming of the "million Man March;" That's what I get for listening == at least I didn't waste my afternoon watching this thing...
To: Sledge
You are not alone, and we Colonials are glad to have you here. I've been here off and on since 1998 - this place has given me much comfort. THanks again. ;)
Best Regards, Ivan

Sad but true. We're the : "Sell-Outs", "Uncle Toms", Handkerchief Heads", and "Oreos". It literally made my head hurt just watching these Bozos spew their garbage. And the Screeching Mimi...very rough on the eardrums. When people possessed of this much hatred and evil are putting it in your direction, you know you stand with the angels.
Best Regards, Ivan

Million who??? Just about the same number of losers showed up at that yuckfest as this one.
To: mhking
But you can make it up watching the whole show starting at 8:00pm tonight.
Don't think I'll make it a double feature though. One horror show a day is enough.
To: Militiaman7
Thanks very much. I don't know if we have Flowers Original at my local, but I'll definitely raise a glass of Spitfire Ale to everyone here.

Happy belated Birthday...you have a very cool sister.

Happy belated Birthday...you have a very cool sister. She is actually more liberal than I, but then again so are most people. She just picked it up in Borders and said that I needed to have it. Yes, I'm indeed fortunate. ;)

As you see and hear at this rally, there are many black leaders who encourage by example such rotten language. Martin Luther King spoke well, even though he borrowed other people's works, his picks were good ones in style and form, as well as content.

Unfortunately, "PT Barnum Journalism" is what we have.
There were probably quite a few good souls in that crowd today that ate up every word fed to them, never realizing that as long as one blames someone or something else for their station in life, they will always be slaves. The greater tragedy is, like Dorothy and the ruby slippers, they hold the key to their own freedom and don't know it.
I don't think any amount of money will make Pam Africa or Louis Farrakhan et. al. happy. Hate is polychromatic.

Martin Luther King spoke well, even though he borrowed other people's works, his picks were good ones in style and form, as well as content. I'm probably not in the best frame of mind to write about this, or maybe I am, as I watched Henry V on DVD earlier today which is the language at its best. People don't seem to realise that the clarity of one's language is indicative of the clarity of one's thought. This is why the Left has made so many attempts to recast the language, because by this, they hope to recast thought itself, if not destroy it. For their schemes, they need dull lumps of people who are willing to accept orders from a narrow elite, i.e., the elites in a government. By eliminating the intellectual tools to question this elite, they, by conscious design or not, intend to implement their rule.
The elimination of clear discourse is a step in this direction. Lowering educational standards is another.

"Got it, but I need the Linguistic etiology ot the following:
"...gwine razzupen shkoffta shaklz..."Oh.........well, that's roughly "going to rise up and shake off the shackles...".
Either that, or the speaker was asking for donations for a liver operation. Not quite sure which.

Well said. Fine work takes fine tools. An artisan knows when to use a hacksaw and when to use a razor blade.

It's not just a white thing ... I think it is a poor urban thing. Growing up I had one buddy whose dad spoke the same way. Every thing angry, and every other word f**k. I takes while to get used to. Yep .. I know plenty of white folks that use the same language
I have loads of fond memories of taking the A Local when I use to work in downtown Philly ..
But it still beat taking the A Express and being stuck on the Surekill Expressway for 2 hours
