Of the items on my list of questions, which ones do you oppose? Just curious, given your usual responses to anything having to do with illegal immigration.

As much as I'm opposed to Illegal Aliens persisting in our country, I want to have realistic expectations in tackling the problem. It didn't happen overnight, and it won't be turned around overnight. That said, I think we can make significant progress in just a few years, if only the FedGov summons the integrity to listen to the will of the people, who are mostly as weary of you and I of their malfeasance on Illegals.

As to your specific list, you were asking these questions with respect to Michelle Malkin, but here are my thoughts (I don't claim to know hers, specifically)...

1. Close down the borders to illegals?

I don't want to close down the borders, beyond taking prudent steps to prevent Illegals, drugs, and elements of terrorism into our country. Security at the border is certainly important, but obsessing over it is like fretting over a bandage while neglecting over the infection.

I think the greatest headway will be made against Illegals from the American Interior. In doing so, the flow of Illegals over the border will lessen significantly, making those other vital Border Patrol efforts more manageable.

2. Round up all the undocumented illegals already here and deport them immediately?

I don't favor attempting to round up all of the Illegals, as I think the steps necessary to do that would have grievous unintended consequences. Keep in mind, there are between 8 and 13 million of them here. Rounding up all of them would require a lot more effort on our part than is necessary.

I'd like to see sting operations set up at day laborer sites, and cooperation between the IRS and INS in locating Illegals using false Social Security numbers. I think the effect of several hundred thousand such apprehensions and deportations would generate a rather salutory snowball effect, which I described here...

They Will Deport Themsleves

3. Will she and her troops round up all of the illegals with false documents, including the infamous drivers licenses now handed out by benighted States ?

I would not use troops in this effort at all. I think the risks of modifying the Posse Comitatus Act to allow the military to be involved in civilian law enforcement are not worth taking. I also think they're unnecessary.

We do have a manpower problem in dealing with Illegals. I would suggest a Border Patrol Volunteer Reserve. Allow able-bodied men and women to be trained and assist the Border Patrol in support capacities. Some of the age and physical requirements of the military could be loosened, so that people over 40 could serve. I believe if we had a program where volunteers could serve one or two week shifts, once or twice a year, many of the manpower problems could be solved.

Will she locate and imprison all fabricators of false documents?

This should be one of the highest priorites. Further, the use of Mexican matricular consul (sp?) IDs must be stopped.

Will she bend to the wishes of La Raza, Chicano Nation and the People's Socialist State of California and allow the ilegals to get the amnesty that Bush has hinted they should get?

There should be no Amnesty for any Illegal, ever again.

Will she do all she can to influence Congress to dump the Spanish language requirements for all Federal documents?

I think this is a high priority as well, but I don't think it ought to be the responsibility or jurisdiction of the INS Chief to try and implement this policy throughout the government. If even a few of the steps I've outlined above are taken, that person will have more than enough to do.

Good points. There's no need to go from door to door and drag out the maids and nannies, there's no need to drag farm workers out of the fields. There are different levels of illegals, those working hard for cash to feed families back home in Mexico are the least of the problem. Those committing felony fraud though to obtain any kind of government handout including free education and food stamps or employment should be deported and that should be easy enough to do by cleaning up the Social Security number databases ---looking for fraudulent and stolen numbers and finding those using them. Since what they're doing is a felony, they should be charged with that crime, heavily fined and then deported --never to come back.

Also illegals aren't the only problem, many legals are coming here never to work but to enjoy a life on handouts, we should end the practice of anchor babies and sponsors who never take financial responsibility for their immigrants. It's ridiculous that someone 125% over the poverty level can bring in any number of immigrants who immediately head for the SSI and other welfare offices. I wondered how this one doctor I know brought over his mother and got her HUD housing and Medicaid and Medicare right off the bat ---it turns out that one of the other "poorer" family members sponsored her so her wealthier physician son doesn't have to help pay for mom ---the taxpayers do. Many system changes could be made without dragging people into border patrol vans.

While Michelle Malkin would be an 'attractive' replacement for Ziggy, my gut tells me it's going to be a Tom Ridge kinda guy. That would be the Yale, Northeastern, establishment thing to do.
