Okay - let's stipulate that some priests and other Catholic clerics abused their position, violated their vows and victimized innocent people.

Let's also stipulate that by allowing these priests to commit these acts, the Church hierarchy is complicit. Let's also stipulate that by doing so, the Church hierarchy has handed its enemies an excellent truncheon with which to be beaten. I'd even stipulate that, to an extent, the Church hierarchy deserves a few whacks from the truncheon, especially Cardinal Law, who you mentioned in one of your posts.

But, having said all that, the joke you posted waaaaay back at no. 15 was not funny. Nor is the implication in this post (and others on this thread) that priests as a class abuse people funny. Or accurate. And that's why everyone is so "inflamed." Catholics have had to take a lot of abuse this year, most for things not of our own making, and yes, some of us are a wee bit sensitive about that.

Whether it was your intention or not, by making light initially about what these shaved apes did in the Cathedral, you opened yourself up to charges of Catholic bashing. In other words, like the Church, you handed those who would bash you a truncheon. And if you step back from things a bit and look at the words you wrote, you should be able to see why some posters took your ham-handed attempts at humor as Catholic bashing.

I have met probably 100 priests in my lifetime. One priest in particular was a lousy human being, a pedantic, self-important windbag. Others I've known hit the bottle too much. One priest I've met is no longer a priest because he was convicted of sexual assault. Another priest I knew left the priesthood because he married my aunt. Priests are human beings and as a result they are subject to all of the same temptations and failings as anyone else. But the vast majority of priests I know are honest, decent servants of God, who care deeply for their ministry and are horrified by what has happened. We have a lot of wounds to heal and a lot of damage to repair. As a Catholic, I'd like to get on with that work and hurtful comments such as what you posted at no. 15 don't help. Nor does some radio show trying to desecrate St. Patrick's.

I take you at your word that you are Catholic. I also hope that someday you will understand why what you've posted here has "inflamed" so many people and that you will join those of us who are trying to repair the breach, instead of throwing off one liners.

Peace,
MdNB

I see you are a Libertarian. I thought Libbies were just dope-smoking, pro-choicers who wanted less taxes.

Okay.... and then??

You must wear a disguise to work---or a suit of armor......

I'm lucky enough to be in a Chemistry Department, where most of my colleagues are apolitical. Even those who say they're liberal mean liberal in the 1960 sense. Unlike conservative or liberatarian colleagues in the social sciences and humanities (and even in the business school) I've never been retaliated against for my views, and it's fun being a conservative on campus; there's always some new piece of left wing idiocy to mock.

I still think my one-liner was amusing and, a few others do as well, despite the views of all the inflamed Freepers.
It was not sacreligious. And I said I did not condone the acts of people who took part in the prank. This, after all, is a forum in which participants are encouraged to submit their own views. I did not name-call or fling insults as others have done to me. I have only defended my one-liner with statements which I believe to be true. If people don't wish to agree, that is their right. What else is there to say?

Therefore, you must think it was amusing, too, or you wouldn't state that you were the only one who cared about the etiology of my sense of humor.

"Etiology" in the sense of a disease.

Just to remind you...I never said the act was funny...I thought my original little one-liner was funny. Please go back and read it. I think it was post # 15.

And just to remind YOU: I was responding to your statement that you didn't understand and attempting to explain to you WHY so many were upset. You stated:

What has become of us that we can't see some humor in things? No one here is condemning anything- - -except my posts. How this grew into an accusation of heresy I don't understand. How people could be so sensitive I don't understand.

And just to ALSO remind you, you did state it was funny here:

Secondly, I think whatever other people do that does not concern me is strictly their business. What I hold sacred is my business. Those people who took part in that stunt will get what the law allows as their punishment. Other than that, it does not concern me. Do I think it was a nice thing to do? No. Do I think it was humorous? Yes.

So you might want to refresh your memory before you try and tell us any more untruths, OK? You see, I read the entire thread.

What untruths? I meant my joke was funny - - this whole thread is funny - - -I have not told any untruths. Do I get penance now?
Listen. I am at the office. I am leaving now and will not be responding to anything until I return here on Monday. I do not have a PC at home, so this will have to be it until Monday.

"...despite the views of all the inflamed Freepers. "

Not inflamed; "bored" is more like it.

It was an obvious joke. When a stand-up comic realizes his performance is bombing he inevitably falls back on poo-poo, ca-ca, doo-doo and pee-pee jokes. The audience laughs. But they are not amused.

In the future he will also be able to fall back on Catholic pedophilia jokes along with the poo-poo, ca-ca, doo-doo and pee-pee jokes. (It won't be homosexuality or his carreer will be aborted.)

The audience will laugh. But they will not be amused.

And after a while, Catholics might decide to shake the dust off their sandals and go someplace where the comics are talented and witty.....

That's why I'm here. BTW, maybe I can save you some time tonight. Jay sez to send your dollars straight to the General Electric Company at Rockefeller Plaza, NYC. He said to tell you "we bring good things to life."

You should be able to find the place; it's just across the street from the Cathedral, which you've surely visited -- possibly with a friend from Virginia, ha ha ha. ("ironic" laughter)

Slouching toward Gomorrah. Years ago I was in a niteclub listening to the featured comedian and to this day I regret that I did not stand up and tell him that enough was enough. I did not defend my catholic faith from stupid, not so funny one liners. My failing. Not his.
