Officials with the Patrolman's Benevolent Association in New York were so concerned that New York Sen. Hillary Clinton would once again be booed off the stage during yesterday's Times Square demonstration for police and firefighter pay hikes that they begged the master of ceremonies to do what he could to keep it from happening.
"Before the time came to introduce her some of the hierarchy of the PBA were getting nervous," said WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg, who MC'd the event, in an account to his audience afterwards.
"They're gonna boo her. They're gonna really boo her," he said worried PBA officials told him. "Try to do whatever you can to make sure that doesn't happen," the top cops begged. "Could you do something to make sure they don't boo her?"
In addition to warning the other speakers, PBA delegates waded into crowd of 50,000 demonstrators before Clinton's appearance and urged their members not to heckle and jeer the former first lady, New York's Channel 9 news reported late Thursday.
The bid to spare Mrs. Clinton from a rerun of the reception she got last Oct. 20, when cops and fireman booed her off the stage during Paul McCartney's 9-11 benefit concert, extended to keeping news of her appearance secret until the last minute to minimize protest from police rank and file.
Malzberg said even he didn't know he'd be introducing the New York Senator until his own radio station reported she was invited to the event Thursday morning. The surprise appearance left many in the crowd grumbling, "I can't believe Hillary was here," he said.
Malzberg, a staunch Clinton critic himself, did his best not exacerbate the crowd's already simmering disdain for the 2004 presidential hopeful, referring to her as a "new friend" of the NYPD during his introduction.
But despite his best efforts boos were still audible - along with some lukewarm applause. Malzberg said most of the applause came from the PBA staff on stage.
"I'm very honored to be here today," Mrs. Clinton bellowed above the crowd's din. "And I'm especially honored because every single one of you know that there hasn't been a greater amount of sacrifice for any city in the world than by the police department and the fire department of New York City."
After her speech PBA delegates carried Mrs. Clinton off the stage in a symbolic demonstration of a "rescue lift."
Oh, sorry, "pain in the @ss."
Malzberg, a staunch Clinton critic himself when hiding behind a microphone, did his best to avoid making a principled stand at a moment that clearly demanded it.
Because, she wasn't in a body bag.
I did a double take. I read it first as plenty of hyena surgeries on the horizon.
Although I don't think they could use the module as it is only 12 feet wide and Billery is.....

"After her speech...Patrolman's Benevolent Association delegates....carried Mrs. Clinton off the stage in a symbolic demonstration of a "rescue lift."
So,let me get this straight---Mr. Do Dad Malzberg blatantly lies in saying, "I had no idea she was going to be here", even though he was MC-ing the event.Come on---yeah I can't remember how I got to work today either....Then "...PBA delegates carried Mrs. Clinton off the stage in a symbolic demonstration..."But, they found enough delegates to do just that.Where's the video footage of this, hmmm? Not one camera at an event full of 50,000 people? I'll believe this when I see it.A 'thick' senator of the USA allowing herself to be carried away?(On the other hand,'The Beast' is capable of anything)
Police are outraged over reports that they'll receive a 14.1 percent pay raise under a contract arbiter's proposal that would include 10 extra days of work per year. Under the decision, cops will get a retroactive 5 percent increase for each of the last two years. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association wants a 23 percent pay hike over two years. ...
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was both cheered and jeered by the sweltering throng. ... link
I wonder for how long they also had to go through decontamination after being that close to crusty.
I thought they would get "volunteers" to haul her off thestage. I'm thinking of new probationary firefighters with union card problems.
This is a great example of how out of touch many unions are with the rank and file.
1-Bloomberg can't make budget even with cigarette taxes
2-Hillary never showed her monkey head during the tragedy
3-They realize the Leftists are not going to do anything for them
4-The heroes adore Bush and Guliani who have been there for them
No, they needed a fork lift just to carry her ego...
She won't run for President. She'll run for VICE President. Pitty the poor fool in the first slot.
(Any bets on how long he will live after the election?)
