I am no expert on historical models of immirgration, but I have to belive that what is going on now is far in excess of what happened historicaly. (just so you know, as a business owner a majority of my employees are Hispanic....with proper work authorization of course.) Right now it's to the point that most employment ads state bilingual preferred. and not just for entry level "grunt" work. I some city goverments you can forget about getting a job if you are not fluent in Spanish (and English).

The main difference are the numbers (much higher numbers, though as a percentage of the whole population smaller), and the distribution (there's a lot less diversity to the current immigration boom). But the behavior of the group, and resistance to it, is following the tried and true pattern.
