BENTONVILLE, Ar(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. , the world's largest retailer, on Tuesday said quarterly profit rose more than 25 percent as consumers flocked to the discounter in the slow U.S. economy.

He is not his wife. Regardless at what level a person is working, denigration of that level is totally unwarranted.
Just perhaps, I or others here might consider your staion in life and give you a "wake up call".
I would not do that as it would be uncalled for.
From you, a person who doesn't keep his OWN PROMISES? HAR!
How is your friend Hillary?
Meanwhile we taxpayers subsidize Wal-Mart by paying tax dollars to their workers via the EIC (Earned Income Credit).
Fine - even the Republican senators love her, as she flirts with them.
No kidding!
Are they paying minimum wages? That's a yes around here and the slaves that work there are not happy. They barely get by even with a second job. I refuse to buy anything there until they stop being supplied from anywhere but the US (The Chicoms are their biggest suppliers).
Slavery can only be imposed with the use of force. Since it is only the government which can use force to achieve its goals (in the US anyway), then only the government can institute slavery. Since a minimum wage (or any wage controls at all) can be viewed as fixing the value of someone's labor in spite of it's value in the market, then this could be viewed as a form of slavery.
Another spin on this might be that if the government forces one person's labor to be valued at a lower value simply to lend preference to another individual (or group) then this might be viewed as slavery as well.
So by not eliminating that minimum wage law, the government could be viewed as promoting a brand of slavery, but personally I think it's a harsh assessment.
I'm sure this is what you meant right? What does this have to do with the people who work at wal-mart of their own free will?
They work at Wal-Mart because there is no better opportunities out there.
Meanwhile Wal-Mart, and others fund the Cato Institute among others, to encourage massive immigration to keep the worker supply up, and wages down.
Why? There is rampant fraud when it comes to the EIC: non-existent dependents, and if you juggle the numbers just right, you can max out on the EIC.
These are easy pickins' for an IRS auditor, who can make his/her stats look good just by focusing on these perps.
Now, you may ask, why doesn't the IRS go after the greedy rich people? Simple: those 'greedy rich people' hire CPAs like me to make sure their taxes are done correctly, NOT to pay the least tax possible (although that is a normal by-product of my work).
These greedy rich folks know that an audit is an enormous waste of time and money, and it diverts them from the pursuits that make them wealthy.
In 20 years of doing tax returns, I've had ONE audited by the IRS (the case is ongoing), and my clients like the peace of mind they have when they see my signature on their return. With that peace of mind, they return to their more profitable pursuits.
Re: Wal-Mart and EIC; so what! They are breaking no laws, and are creating jobs throughout the world. Using your logic, we're being double-taxed for all government employees who also qualify for the EIC.
Sheesh, all we need now is for MurryMom to join the thread!
Cashiers in our area start between $6-7 per hour. I should know, my wife works for our local Wal-Mart in the accounting office.
It's worked well for us because she works nights on weekends so we haven't had to put the youngest in child care. She's leaving there to go back to teaching part-time this fall.
But from our experience, Wal-Mart has been an excellent company to work for.
Now if there were a law to pay the wal-mart staff more than they are worth; the difference being made up by others (through higher prices or taxes or whatever) that might be considered slavery. But not slavery of the people at Wal-Mart, but slavery of everyone else.
Just what exactly are you proposing here, that we re-institute slavery so that wal-mart can pay their employees more than the value of their service?
They mock her behind her back.
Duh!!!!
Great - so I have to subsidize Wal-Mart with my taxes that go to their employees via the EIC.
We do make up the difference as taxpayers with the EIC (Earned Income Credit) that is given to Wal-Mart employees.
YES!
Fine. We'll just shut Wal-Mart down and let all the people that work and shop there go on the Welfare rolls.
Just what is it you want? The company provides jobs for people who need them. Work hard, you make more money.
Sorry it bothers you that Wal-Mart is good at what they do.
The problem for Tuco-Twit and his buddies is that capitalism, read freedom, are really messy things. Outcomes are less predictable than in other countries, which is not to liberals' liking.
I've been unemployed and displaced more than once in my life. There's a good chance that it will happen again. Given the alternatives that are out there, I will continue to place my faith in the USA.
Here's another shot in the gut for Tuco-Twit: could it be the reason why so many people buy from Wal-Mart is that we're body slammed in the wallet from too many taxes? After all, there's the economic law of elasticity: when you have less to spend, you tend to look for the lower price.
For liberals, the only time choice is a good thing is when it comes to the slaughter of unborn children. The rest of the time, choice is bad, baD, BAD!!!!
For Wal-Mart to pay enough of a salary so my taxes do not subsidize their workers with the EIC.
The company provides jobs for people who need them. Work hard, you make more money.
Work hard for Wal-Mart and you're still on Welfare via the EIC.
