We have lots of government owned cargo ships. I've worked on 'em. Tell you the truth I've have no idea why the Navy is contracting for more.

No more LPH's in service (Per Naval Vessel Register). Did you mean the LHA/LHD Amphibious flat top type ships or the LSD Landing dock type ships?

A LPH is or was an AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT SHIP (HELICOPTER) Avionics and ship was designed for helo duty CARRIER duty which also carried VTO planes in other words a hanger deck ect. Currently the USS Guam (LPH-9), homeported at Norfolk, VA, is the only remaining ship of this class in service.

We have 7 LHD's in service the 8th is to be ready in 2004 and is named USS Trent Lott LHD 8 {no I'm not joking}

We have 5 LHA's in service with 4 more that have been canceled. If we are in need then it makes only good sense to build them rather than go transport shopping & telling all nations of the world we lack sufficent sea power to operate as an independent nation.

During and after the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, my friend was shipping ammo to our forces in Vietnam. At the time of the Desert Shield buildup, I asked him what would happen.

"Whatever happens, they'll return with a lot less ammo than they have."

We have a tsunami of leaks:

The various major papers have their Deep Throats with war plans from A to Z.

We have Xinhua dropping the bomb in Beirut that the U.S. will simply seize Saudi airfields.

Following the leak that Rand told a room packed with VIPs that Saudi was the enemy.

Euros have had their rectal temperature taken every three hours and are vehemently opposed to an attack that Bush hasn't plans for.

Saddam is 160 feet down in his bunker in Berlin going over charts showing the mother of all nothings.

We have a meeting in Teheran with Hizbollah, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad which may not have occurred.

Now courtesy of the cheese-eating French who cannot call a terrorist a terrorist (as the Israeli Embassy in Paris is destroyed by fire) announcing to the world (through Howard Rubinstein's New York Post) that the U.S. needs a big boat to haul a lotta stuff over into the Middle East.

And more and more, and more each day, and more tomorrow, as we ro-ro row our boats gently down a stream of leaks.

This is the summer of burning Saddam's brain.

While Bush burns brush and Hillary burns that she can't get in the shot.

There is a method to this madness, and the clymers are playing parts beyond their dreams.

And there's a bunker buster turning under a lathe right now with the inscription, "To Saddam In The New Tone".

katt....

Stalin was told time and again, when and where the Germans were coming, result complete surprise. Same for the Brits and French, complete surprise. Hitler fell into his own trap when he was told when and where the Allies would invade France. All of the information and disinformation serves a purpose, Saddam is not stupid, he knows we are coming, just when, how and where is what concerns him.

Did anyone ever think that our heavy-lift ship leases would be secret?

Did anyone ever think that we don't want this heavy-lift ship lease to be a secret? Maybe we want to send a signal.

From the DoD Dictionary:

flexible deterrent option

(DOD) A planning construct intended to facilitate early decision by laying out a wide range of interrelated response paths that begin with deterrent-oriented options carefully tailored to send the right signal. The flexible deterrent option is the means by which the various deterrent options available to a commander (such as economic, diplomatic, political, and military measures) are implemented into the planning process. Also called FDO. See also deterrent options.

Hmmmm?? The NY Post is a conservative rag, and I don't think they would intentionally print anything the President didn't want them to print. Even if you tell your enemy you're coming, he still doesn't know WHEN!

Yeah. Maybe we can film them landing on shore, like we did in Somalia. I never understood why nobody shot out those camera lights.

Does someone have a megaphone to announce the date and time of the attack? Geesh!

Loose Lips sell papers.

The New York Post didn't spill the beans. There is no way we can land troops and equipment in an Arab country without Saddam knowing about it as soon as it happens. It's not as if it's a secret that we plan to attack Iraq.
