FAA says it had 11 other suspect planes on Sept. 11
Monday August 12, 2002
By RICHARD PYLE Associated Press Writer
WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) In the tense minutes after two hijacked jetliners smashed into New York's World Trade Center and another hit the Pentagon, air traffic controllers had as many as 11 other suspect aircraft on their screens, federal aviation officials said Monday.
The concern over possible additional hijackings did not end until 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 11 3{ hours after the first attack on the twin towers when the last of 4,546 commercial aircraft were safely on the ground nationwide.
``Somewhere in the first hour after the first plane hit, we were receiving reports of additional confirmed hijackings. The list at that point in time started to grow,'' said Frank Hatfield, Eastern Region division manager for FAA air traffic control operations.
``All reports were treated as unconfirmed hijackings until we eliminated that as a possibility. We were not satisfied that the last number was four until 12:15 p.m., and every airplane in the country was on the ground,'' he said.
``No one had ever envisioned a scenario where the United States would land every plane in the sky.''
Airports became jammed with the unexpected aircraft, yet there were no mishaps, he said.
Hatfield and other FAA officials briefed news media on Monday at the New York Terminal Approach Control Center, known as TRACON, on Long Island.
Mike McCormick, air traffic control manager at New York Center the main traffic control center for New York area airports made the unprecedented decision at 9:04 a.m. to declare ``ATC Zero,'' meaning that normal services were suspended and no aircraft could fly into, out of or through the region's airspace.
At that time there were still hundreds of aircraft in the skies around New York and the western Atlantic, for which the Long Island-based center had responsibility.
The decision came just after the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, struck the south tower of the World Trade Center, confirming that the country was under terrorist attack.
Unlike the first hijacked plane, American Airlines Flight 11, the second Boeing 767's transponder was working and he knew where it was headed, McCormick said, even before the Newark Airport control tower picked it up visually as it flew south along the Hudson River, turned and headed back toward the twin towers.
``I wanted to make sure everyone understood that this (attack) was not a single aircraft, that this was not a single event. There was at least one other aircraft involved and there could be many more, and we needed to prepare for all eventualities,'' McCormick said.
The officials said many changes have been effected in emergency procedures since Sept. 11 but declined to go into detail for security reasons.
Hatfield said, however, that the time frame for the FAA to make contact with the military in an emergency ``has been shaved from minutes to seconds.''
On that day, the first two military interceptors, Air Force F-15 Eagles from Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts, scrambled airborne at 8:52 a.m., six minutes after the first attack, but too late to do anything about the other jets heading for the Trade Center or Pentagon.
Those struck at 9:02 and 9:40 a.m., respectively. The fourth hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed near Somerset, Pa., at 10:07 a.m.
McCormick said that under the new procedures, ``We are in direct instantaneous communication with our military and those people responsible for defending our country.''
Hatfield said security now has a much higher priority than it did before Sept. 11.
``We have searched our souls and tried to figure out what we could have done differently on that day,'' he said. ``Probably the best thing we could have done was to improve our communications, and over the last year we have aggressively addressed that issue.''
DETAINED INDIANS IN USA STUMP FBI
...snip...
According to the Times, while the FBI doubts that the men did actually play a role in the anthrax attacks, their roommate in Jersey City, Mohammad Aslam Pervez, who has also been detained in the terrorism investigation, once worked at a newsstand in Trenton, New Jersey and lived near the post office where the letters carrying anthrax were processed.
The first anthrax letter mailed from Trenton was postmarked September 18. This, however, was several days after the three men were already in custody.
Investigations have revealed that Khan, (34) and Azmath, in his early 30s, helped manage five news stands at a Newark train station, with Pervez, (37) a naturalized American citizen from Pakistan.
Pervez has been charged with lying to federal agents when they questioned him about more than $110,000 in checks and money orders. IANS
Those struck at 9:02 and 9:40 a.m., respectively. The fourth hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed near Somerset, Pa., at 10:07 a.m.
Wait a sec. We had two jets in the air by 8:52 but too late to do anything about the plane heading for the Pentagon, which struck almost an hour later, at 9:40, or UA #93, which crashed almost an hour and a half later. I am not reassured by this picture of our air defense. Does this worry anyone else?
Unknown. I am merely pointing out that the Hammad cousins were unlikely to have sabotaged the sprinkler system, both from an operations analysis perspective and from actual events on 9/11.
The burden of proof is on the person making the affirmative claim. The evidence offered to date does not support the commission of the alleged act of sabotage.
Maybe they thought the 72 virgins expected them to slip $10 bills into their garters.
And the United States Navy would be doing nothing to stop them, huh?
FITZ, you're usually a great deal more intelligent than this.
I don't have proof, my question is, if you were in law enforcement dedicated to protecting the public, would not the Hammad connection to the WTC warrant an investigation into why he was in the WTC, why a letter from a man using an alias from a non-existent company was presented in court to explain his WTC connection?
Would it be unreasonable to interview Mr.Daviddenko and ask who hired his non-existent company to work on the sprinklers in the WTC? Normally, all work on sprinklers was overseen by the Port Authority, but not Denko Mechanical's work.
What would Occam's Razor tell you about Ms. Smith being burned alive with gasoline in Mr.Odtllah's car?
First off, is the company actually nonexistent? I've seen three different versions of this. (Nonexistent, exists but was not hired, exists and was legitimately hired.)
The level of knowledge needed to sabotage the WTC sprinklers far exceeds what an unlicensed plumber would have available to him, even if he was working on the building.
Would it be unreasonable to interview Mr.Daviddenko and ask who hired his non-existent company to work on the sprinklers in the WTC? Normally, all work on sprinklers was overseen by the Port Authority, but not Denko Mechanical's work.
No, Mister David Denko (I'm willing to bet that's your problem right there) is the LAST guy I'd interview--I'd go through the Port Authority's contracts office and review the official records, instead.
What would Occam's Razor tell you about Ms. Smith being burned alive with gasoline in Mr.Odtllah's car?
Nothing--except that she burned to death in Mr. Odtllah's car.
You seem desperate for this to come off like a very bad Hollywood movie. There are other connections on the WTC that are far more likely to be remunerative to investigators.
Sorry, but airplanes hitting the towers are more than enough to explain why the sprinklers failed.
It's much worse than a bad Hollywood movie for the family and friends of Katherine Smith.
FYI, Sergi Davidenko lives at the apartment address that was provided to the State of New York as the address for Denko Mechanical. The name Sergi Denko was provided as the owner.
Thanks for your response to the question.

This is the only information I can find for a Denko Mechanical operating in the U.S.(there is a Denko Mechanical in Canada, unrelated in my opinion)
I can find no phone numbers in yellow or white pages, no information from real estate records, licensing boards, OSHA, worker's compensation records, etc.
You were very effective on the OKC bombing threads critiquing efforts to investigate the Middle Eastern connection. Now much of the same information you had a problem with can be heard on FOX News channel and other media outlets on a weekly basis. I do not remember a single contribution you ever made to those threads, only constant critiques, which was certainly your right.
Here's a chance for you to contribute. I have exhausted every resource I know to find information on Denko Mechanical. I have announced this before and I will issue the challenge to you, in honor of the first person to find any information that confirms the existence of the Denko Mechanical identified in the filing above, I will mail a $25 money order to Freerepublic as a donation recognizing their efforts.
The information would be in addition to the press reports covering the letter from Sergi Denko confirming Hammad's employment and the above filing with the State of New York.
Your call Poohbah, perpetual critic or contributor.
As for the other information and how it's not available...I'll break this news to you gently: not all information is accessible on the Internet.
As for your whining about my "critiquing" and how the stuff I was critiquing can be heard on Fox News...IMNHO, it reflects poorly on Fox.
If you really want me to do your work for you, I will charge you my independent consulting fee. WARNING: it's a LOT of money. If you merely want me to get a case of hinge-head and blindly agree with you, then you're going to be unsatisfied.
What is it, two cans of dog food?
232E 26th St. is a quiet old 6 story residential building with 4 units per floor. The Realty company which owns the building has a unit, but there are no other businesses listed in the foyer.
I guess I will have to be content with the critiques.
They are not the same thing. A work order is issued in response to a specific issue (the men's room on the 37th floor flooding, for example). A SOW is issued at the beginning of the fiscal year, and outlines the kind of work a contractor will perform during the period covered by the SOW.
