My son's therapist gave me a pretty dry textbook on autism. I think that's where I read about overdevelopment of the brain. Just a theory.
Asperger Syndrome is fairly new and is a high functioning form of autism. The kids are generally smart, but socially clueless and just kinda odd. My son also has problems with anxiety and obsessive thinking and that's what we've mainly focused on.
It's difficult to see your kid struggle socially in elementary school. It's only going to get harder for him unless we can help him to become more "normal". Some people will brush this off as being unimportant...not everyone is popular, get over it! But my son is a big target. Couple that with his anxiousness and we have a recipe for teenaged disaster.
