Charlton Heston must step down. Who should step up?
8/11/02 | DrCarl

With the recent announcement by Charleton Heston that he has Alzheimer's and, as a result, will have to give up his position as President of the National Rifle Association, someone will have to be nominated to the Presidency. As this is primarily a PR position, I nominate Tom Celek in the hope that should he accept, he will credit Rosie O'Donnell for his decision

Shall we petition the NRA to ask that Celek be considered? Here's an example of an on-line petition we could build.

Usually gun control idiots claim that the 2nd Amendment was written to give the government authority to fund such enitities as the national guard, etc.

Yet, it beggars description to imagine that any of the rights in the Bill of Rights were for the government instead of for individuals.

I'd love to see Nugent for Prez, as he is definitely not lacking in the "balls" category; however, Selleck would probably be a better choice as he's less likely to scare off potential supporters!

Rush Limabaugh

LOL! Absolutely not! Rush would hold up a golf club at the NRA convention and proclaim, "...my cold dead fingers".

Mel Gibson is a US citizen and has always been one since he was born here. His father moved to Australia when he was 11 or 12. He never got Australian citizenship or renounced his US citizenship, so he is an American.

Also Mel Gibson is not the one who was responsible for all the pro-abortion and anti-gun crap in the Lethal Weapon movies. That came from the director, and also from co-star Danny Glover.

The NRA only seems to say we need guns for sporting.

I'll tell you what. You show me an official NRA publication or statement that says this is the official position of the organization, and I will resign my Life Membership.

Frankly, the only thing the NRA needs is a spine. Elect Ted Nugent NRA pres, and that'll happen.

I was responding to post 17. Yes, B. Barr is on Board. But Larry Craig wasn't mentioned in post 17. Bob Barr has his hands full being a US Congressman to devote sufficient time to NRA President. Point is, unless they are on Board, they ain't goin' nowhere.

>Why should he step down... His term ends next April...

I guess you've never seen Alzheimer's up close then. Good for you. You're lucky.

>Tom Selleck?

I've always admired those who know how to spell the names of play actors. It's a sign of intelligence, you know. Furthermore, you were almost able to guess that I meant Tom "Selleck". Further proof.

I don't think so...to at least half of your list; the LAST thing the NRA needs is a "hate magnet" as it's head. Can you really, really imagine Pat Buchanan (and the negative publicity) as the head of the NRA? Talk about death knell!

I really like Tom Selleck, but don't believe he'd have any interest whatsoever...he's always been a political "shrinking violet", and IMO wouldn't have the stomach for the job.

And we can't forget the way Rosie left him looking like a deer in headlights during her infamous ambush.

IIRC Susan Howard made mincemeat of the commie-mommie spokeswoman a couple of years ago on live tv (FOX?) prior to the first Misled Mothers March. She's no shrinking violet and unlike Heston, who has always needed a prepared speech (not a bad thing, he just has no skills in debating), she can argue convincingly without cue cards and a teleprompter.

You might want to get an idea of Mel's views on guns by watching his Lethal Weapon movies... Not who I'd want to have leading the NRA.

Heston was never the Second Amendment scholar that he needed to be. He's a passionate man who believes in it but he can't cite the original reasons.
We don't need another hollywood type.
What we need is someone who has worked as an administrator, a lecturer and a scholar.
We need someone who lives and breathes the Bill of Rights.
My first choice would be Robert K. Brown or Jeff Cooper but there are times the President has to kiss the babies and those two aren't the ones to do that.
