Charlton Heston must step down. Who should step up?
8/11/02 | DrCarl

With the recent announcement by Charleton Heston that he has Alzheimer's and, as a result, will have to give up his position as President of the National Rifle Association, someone will have to be nominated to the Presidency. As this is primarily a PR position, I nominate Tom Celek in the hope that should he accept, he will credit Rosie O'Donnell for his decision

Shall we petition the NRA to ask that Celek be considered? Here's an example of an on-line petition we could build.

Besides his passion for the second amendment, Heston was more difficult to demonize than other potential spokesmen. People knew him, knew of him at least, and respected many aspects of his life beyond the NRA. He cannot be replaced, but hopefully another can bring a different set of abilities to the table and continue protecting our rights.

But if you want to influence who becomes the next spokesman, I would suggest that you join the NRA.

Some background: C. Heston elected to Board of Directors of NRA,1997. Became First VP a few days later. Became President of NRA (elected by Board) in 1998. He was also re-elected to Board of Directors of NRA in 2001, for a three year term. He has been re-appointed to NRA President an unprecedented fourth time, several months ago. A one-year appointment.

Sorry sportsfans, makes no difference whom we "want." The Bylaws specify transition. See my above post.

Selleck, M Gibson. Coulter would be too divisive I think. What the NRA needs is a credible, personable, likeable statesman who is also a good salesman. Because in the end, that's what you're doing to the public, selling your position. Soccer moms and liberals need someone they don't immediately dismiss as a raving lunatic, someone they might secretly want to sleep with to come on the air waves and tell them in a calm voice that Americans have a right and a duty to arm themselves and to stay armed. Not just for sport, not just for self defense, not just for collecting...

Anyway, before I start to ramble- M Gibson, T Selleck would be my first choices. Followed by lots of television commercials starring them.

General Norman Schwarzkopf might be a good spokesman (President) for the NRA.

Lose La Pierre. I have been a life member since 1978, la Pierre is a disgrace.

I'm not sure Spence would work out well. He appears scripted when he speaks, at least to me. Laura Ingram would probably be great. Good looking and articulate. Maybe Spence could loan her his jacket. parsy.

Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis is the guy that threatened Idaho that he would leave the state if Republican Senator candidate (at the time) Larry Craig got elected. I don't think we want a Hollywood leftist leading the fight for our second amendment rights.

I might add that Sen. Larry Craig was on the 2001 NRA Board of Directors.

Bob Barr is an NRA board member. So is Larry Craig, senator from Idaho.

Bob Barr

He'll be free in January of 2003, so that's a good suggestion.

you will find that some of the parties suggested that hunting be included in what became the seconed ammendment

You will also find that one version had "for the common defense", but that wasn't included either. And that's a good thing, since some states, like Massachusetts, have that wording, and they use it to justify the worst sorts of gun control.

Of course the grun grabbers act as if the second amendment contained the "for the common defense" phrase, but it doesn't. In fact it contains no restrictions as to the reasons for keeping and bearing arms. Thus the right to keep and bear them for any reason whatsoever is protected.

Gibson is originally from Australia. That of course does not disqualify him, if he has since become a US citizen. The record of his characters is spotty, his character in "Lethal Weapon 4", having made some anti NRA and anti gunowner statements. I don't hold those against him, he is after all an actor, and was not the producer, writer or director of that movie. Can anyone point to statements or actions that he has made or taken that would indicate he is a strong supporter of the RKBA?
