A family friend piloted an LST for the entire duration of the Iwo landing. The man was branded by the event for life. He's never spoken directly of the invasion, but my father has filled in the details.

If I live to be 100, and live out 1/10th the courage that these men displayed in the span of a few days, I'll be a satisfied man. I think about those 18 year-olds with cow-sh*t from the home place still on their shoes, hitting that beach with nothing more than civic duty, an M-1 and their spinal cords to guide them. Yeesh!

Now imagine Clinton defending Israel.

INFO!

The following is a response from Ray Fornof in Hawaii re my e-mail to him advising of this post to FR and that Sgt Ray Jacobs was not so much as mentioned in the article.

Aloha Gunny,
The "FREE REPUBLIC" must have been out to lunch, somewhere along the line.
When Rodger Johnston introduced Ray Jacobs there at the ceremonies as the long lost Radioman, he was greeted with a huge ovation.
A local station there interviewed Jacobs with much interest. Being the Gentleman that he truly is, Jacobs stole the show.
I am sure that you will receive more information concerning our Ray Jacobs.

"Semper Fi",
Ray "Doc" Fornof
