Mel Gibson considering role of Jesus

Mel Gibson, star of action movies such as Braveheart and Mad Max, is considering casting himself as Jesus in a new film about the last days of Christ set in Matera, southern Italy.

The Italian Catholic daily newspaper Avvenire, reports that the Catholic actor has been meeting with church officials and theologians to gain an insight into Christ's Passion and Crucifixion, including the Last Supper and the vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Matera is a Unesco World Heritage site, famed for the Sassi, palaeolithic cave dwellings that were inhabited until recently.

Filming is due to start next month. Movie sources say Gibson chose the rocky, remote town because it was so convincing in Pasolini's 1964 classic Gospel According to St Matthew - which Gibson has long admired.

Pasolini chose the area for its bleak landscape and used unknown actors in his film - in contrast with the stars cast in other biblical epics of the time, such as the Ten Commandments and Ben Hur. Christ was played by Enrique Irazoqui, a Spanish student, who Pasolini thought resembled the gaunt Jesus of El Greco's paintings.

Which one of these "non-Semite looking" Jews do you think Jesus looked like?

Most all of those Jews look just like, er, regular, um, American type people. If Jesus walked down the street in New York City today dressed in a business suit and brief case with an American haircut, maybe he would look like any other Wall Street banker?

Your right back in his mad Max Days he had the physique and the looks to perhaps pull it off, these days however Joseph might be the correct role.

If Mel Gibson believes he can take on this role, I'm with him. Better him than Tom Cruise, the scientologist whose nose is too big anyway and I never cared for him. Mel Gibson can pull it off with sensitivity and passion.

The reason they look alike is they are genetic cousins. For the history of the "regular people" and the Jews please click on my FR Profile below and read the 3-MINUTE HISTORY.

I think an actor can play younger but it has to be a very convincing performance to pull it off. But, it seems that Mel is directing or producing this. Maybe he'll be one of the apostles. I thought some of them were older than Jesus.

I 'm sure that was some experience typing up those letters to the families of the dead and wounded, Aloha Ronnie.

Mel Gibson did an outstanding performance in "We Were Soldiers".

I hope he does a better job than has been done so far by anyone. Jesus had humor, Jesus was very frank and was not a good house guest when his host confronted him about the type of woman washing his feet, Jesus reminded his host about how shabby he had been treated when there was no one to wash his feet as was the custom. The host had obviously invited him for his own agenda and did not really like Jesus.

The way Jesus came up out of the water at his baptism and his eyes met Satan's. Satan who had been looking for him, hunting him down and killing babies from the time of Moses, even before that, from the time that God said to him "Her seed will crush your skull". Not a word was exchanged between them, Jesus just followed him into the wilderness that would make one great scene and I think that Mel could convey it very well.

But it wouldn't be a bad bet that Caiaphas will be portrayed as an Englishman. Likley Herod and Pilate as well.:-)

"By the way I'm female, sometimes it's hard to tell with a name like Muggs."

Hopefully, the "name" is the only reason to believe you might not be a woman. ;-)

"I thought the Bible said He was nothing special to look at."

But we couldn't very well be casting 'Carrot-Top' in the role of Christ, can we?

Allow me to salute you, sir. You are one of my personal heroes. Though I attended an "all girl" school at that time, we were all keenly embroiled in the war with you. Our brothers, cousins and neighbors were called "by draft" to serve. We who remained behind raised our voices in outrage at the draft of those not legally able to vote. We stood by your side, in solidarity, prayer and support, proudly wearing your names on bracelets. We lobbied our congressmen to lable the police action for what it truly was ... a war. We marched down Broadway in NYC to rally for an end to the war.

Proud to know you, soldier. Happy you made it home. Thank you for serving us and your country well. You are a true hero.

>I thought the Bible said He was nothing special to look at.

>Yes, in fact doesn't it imply or state that he's kind of ugly?

Can you cite specific Bible verses to support those impressions?
