How did it come about that homosexuals began flocking to San Francisco? Did it begin in the 60s with all the hippies?

I think it started in the late Fifties with the Beat Generation. That began the downhill slide, as every two-bit poet in the world came here. Allan Ginsberg was one of the first prominent homosexual "artists" here, and when his fellows around the country saw him speaking without being condemned by (excessively) tolerant San Franciscans, they decided to come, too.
