Re post #42 - I'm not going to go into whether or not some of the remarks meet the good taste test, that's entirely subjective. As far as grape juice fermenting quickly in that climate, without refridgeration, it most certainly would. Also, unpastuerized grape juice would be crawling with bacteria after only a few hours. It was common in the ancient world to drink beer or wine, it was simply a lot safer. If I remember correctly, there was a passage about not drinking water in foreign lands, but that may have been in the Canterbury Tales, it's been a long time.
