How do I know that war is coming?
August 8, 2002 | ARCADIA

I've been reading all the newspapers about the possible war with Iraq. I've noticed that many of the British pagers are constantly searching for clues to determine if "war is comming." They are always reporting this or that detail and saying it signifies military preparations.

For example, they claim that trucks Okhave recently received paint jobs in desert tan, that the US is making inquiries about the availability of tankers, that the US is building up it's strategic oil reserve, etc.

Many Freepers have knowledge of military matters. What signs should one look for? What should start happening and in what order?

I am just looking for general concepts -- not "loose lips" type stuff.

There is no sign.

no sign that we can see. i did read where the military has asked several companies that make smart bombs to work overtime so that the stockpile would be back to where it was before the afghanistan coup. i suspect that with modern warfare the signs are a bit different than they have been.

say we destory Iraq, destory Iran, destroy Syria, destory North Korea, destory Saudi Arabia, and when we are all done and return home, let's destory the communists we've got decaying our liberties and freedoms. It will be even harder to defend ourselves after another twenty-years of this disease.

ok. but you forgot the most important part about war. this is something that the rest of the world is atuned to but we are not -- war reparations.

free oil for 100 years would be sublime.

We are still in a state of war with Iraq..they never surrendered (Saddam, that is)

good point, but i do not declare that the united states declared war on iraq. rather my memory suggests that we supported the united nations with a massive army to enforce a security commission directive.

If it hadn't been for that, the Germans would have taken Stalingrad, then taken the vast wheat fields and people of the ukraine, and then the Russian oil fields, and subsequently all of the Soviet Union, and we would most likely be speaking German today.

good point, except that hitler made many other tacticial errors because he never learned the art of delegation: he was a great micro-manager. hitler could have toppled england, but wanted the entire german army to share in the fun -- giving england time to prepare a defense. he also pushed for the perfect atomic bomb -- not one that simply worked. hitler's atomic bomb bumbling let the united states win the arms race.

Yeah, I remember the Cuban MIssile Crisis. I personanlly saw convoy after convoy of men and munitions headed for MacDill.

If you are an Iraqi troll, well, piss on you. Your ass is grass and we are the lawn mower. ESAD.

Jeepers! There are so many indications.

I'm not expecting an "invasion" type force or a long term commitment of the military in the area after-the-fact. One of the first things Bush did after being sworn in was to fund the Iraqi opposition. Foxnews did an interview of one of those guys in London who said they are much better prepared than the Northern Alliance ever was in Afghanistan and that whole units in the Iraqi military are ready to change sides as soon as the word is given.

I look for something huge, unexpected and overwhelming. I believe this has been the plan all along, but they had to wait for the medical community to catch up with the WMD threat.

In other words, what has slowed this operation down and delayed the announcement of the biggest nation state backing al Queda and last year's anthrax attacks --- was the need to get the necessary Cipro, smallpox vaccine, emergency response, etc. in place to meet the likely counter-WMD attack. Now the US, Britain and Israel are much better prepared and thus, IMHO, it could happen any time.

Just my two cents...

If the left tries to make a political issue of the timing of the attack, it will probably backfire on them.

Hopefully starting on 9-11-02.

Last night was a new moon. The next new moon is Sept. 7th.

What better present for the people of NYC than to have started the attack before 9/11/02?

An announcement on 9-10 that we have bin Laden, dead or alive. Now that would be a real present for the people of NYC!

Not that I disagree with your other statement.

the military has asked several companies that make smart bombs to work overtime

That isn't the kind of sign to look for. What we need is something that everyone can see if they are looking. For example, check the foodstore shelves. If they are heavily depleted of Spam, low-salt Spam, low-fat Spam, industrial-grade Spam, turkey Spam, and Spam-lite overnight, then also check for baby wipes. If they are out of unscented baby wipes and all they have are perfumed baby wipes, that means some are stocking up against possible disruption of city utilities.

"Professional soldiers want a war."

No they don't. But if one occurs, you can bet they want in it.

The stage is being set one piece at a time. As the time approaches there will be incursions into Iraqi airspace. They happen everyday anyway but the media will start reporting them. "Iraq fires on U.S. warplanes"

The radio stations will start playing patrotic songs more often. Veterans will get honored in politicians speaches and by Hollywood. September 11th will get replayed on the TV more than usual.

If the Iraqi people are convinced that we are serious this time and really mean to remove Saddam we have only to sit back and watch. We will nudge the ball with bombing but the Iraqis will take it from there. The challenge is to not simply change one a-hole for another. That will be the hard part.

I think they are just waiting for cooler temps before invading.

I don't think so. I think we would have just dropped 4 nukes instead of 2.......2 on japan, and 2 on germany.
