He was attacked by the men before he was even arrested. "[T]he boys' weeping mother asked them for help. They said she told them her children had just accused Gibson -- their uncle -- of abusing them." The men simply took the word of the mother who took the word of the children, and then they branded him. The men didn't care about evidence or proof, which makes them no better than the pervert that they attacked, imo.
