What Bill said. I can't speak for him, but my local chapter is excellent evidence of why they have their own club. They're seriously unable to adapt to the world most of us live in.

I've been a Mensan since I was seven (I'm 33 now), and I'm proud of it - I even did a stint as newsletter editor/designer/producer for our chapter. I'm just quite underwhelmed by its social aspect.

I went to several local Mensa gatherings before I met Xena's Guy, and it's disconcerting to be in a room of about a hundred people and be a) the only chick with makeup on and b) the thinnest person in the room by about 60 pounds.

High-speed rail as an alternative mode of transportation in the U.S. is long overdue. We are reaching the point of diminishing returns as we expand our 4-lane interstates to 6 or (gasp!!!) 8 lanes. And even costly airport expansions make little sense when (prior to 9/11) the air corridors themselves are over-congested.

High-speed rail and maglev offer the perfect alternative to augment & supplement our highway and air transportation infrastructure. For regional trips between 150 and 350 miles, it is faster than automobile and not that much slower than air. Yet offers the potential to alleviate both congested highways and air corridors!

In light of current economic conditions, construction of this vital transportation infrastructure should be accelerated.

Both major political parties perpetuate The Big Lie regarding Social Security. The Big Lie has existed since Social Security's inception. The debate over "privatization" is only the latest version of The Big Lie.

The Big Lie is that Social Security is some kind of retirement savings plan.

It is NOT.

Social Security is a socialist income redistribution scheme, nothing else.

Those who are working are taxed to provide a "safety net" for those who are less fortunate.
Originally, this meant retirees and surviving dependents.
Congress has, of course, complicated it far beyond this over the last 65 years.

But one fact remains: it is NOT a "savings plan", it is an income redistribution scheme.

A major facet of The Big Lie is that "we have to do something so that Social Security remains solvent in the future.

In today's age of modern computerization, the computation for operating an income redistribution scheme that remains perpetually solvent is quite simple:

This month's total SS tax receipts = Next month's total SS tax disbursements

The only change necessary to the current system is that monthly payments to eligible recipients would be a variable amount, not fixed.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR A MULTI-TRILLION DOLLAR "TRUST" FUND!!!

Congress should NEVER have been permitted to confiscate so much money from the American People in the name of The Big Lie. This fund is nothing but a slush fund that Congress raids to pay for other government expenditures. If private sector employers did the same thing with their companies' pension funds, they'd be placed in prison. The "privatization" plan proposed by Bush is merely an attempt by Wall Street brokerage firms and financial institutions to get in on the scam: grab a portion of a constant revenue stream (guaranteed by taxation) from which they can skim their commissions.

Daschle's "concern" over the Social Security system is a lie.

Bush's plan to Enronize the system is worse.

The American People need to wake up and put these liars and thieves in prison.

Hey, us math majors can only deal with squiggly things that kinda look like funky s's, and deltas (that's, like, a three sided triangle with one side on the very bottom ) and gradients (that's a delta but flip on its head) and then there's this one really important thing that looks kinda like a capital E, but also like a capital W but it fell over on its side, and whenever it has a fallen down eight on top of it like a hat, well that means there are a whooooooooooole lot of somethings to add up, but sometimes they doesn't even add up to a very big number, cause the somethings are getting really small, really fast.

LOL!! Well I'm not much for wearing makeup (think it might upset my wife among others) but add to the weight issue, the slant of politics. Never bothered joining until a couple of years ago myself but after reading a few of the articles in the magazine I realized the old adage is true. Intelligence does not necessarily equal wisdom. If the authors of the articles and letters weren't kicking the belief in God, they spent time dismantling the rest of the conservative movement
