A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 7/31/02

President Bush, while meeting with his cabinet, denounced the attack against Israel that killed seven and injured 80 people at the Hebrew University cafeteria. He issued a statement on America's current economic growth -- not as strong as he would like, but showing strong signs within the new Department of Commerce report (echoed by some private forecasters) that there will be growth of three to five percent, rather than the 1.1 percent for the spring quarter just past.

Bush met privately with Rudy Guliani, who was in the DC area to give a speech.

Ari Fleischer noted at his press briefing that 60 presidential nominees are awaiting confirmation in the Senate, among them: the Deputy Secretary of Energy; FEMA's Deputy Director; NASA's Deputy Administrator; the Office of Management and Budget Deputy Director; 29 foreign policy nominees (some for critical functions); and of course, judicial nominees. He noted that yesterday Daschle "made a commitment" (undefined by Ari) to the President about the nominations on hold and that some Senate members now are objecting to the commitment.

We're a little light on photos today.

Oh, for pity's sakes. I thought we were roughing it with only a small suite at a top hotel. Now you want a houseboat! (Can I come over for lunch?)

Thanks again, DrDeb, for the article. I DO disagree with the following though:

" and definitely quit making every public speech a lecture on
terrorism. "

"Lest we forget." One of Bush's strengths lies in his handling of the terrorists. People should not become lackadaisical about terrorism.

I thought you wanted a small private lake, not a 4 star hotel, sheesh! Next you'll expect me to cook for you. You may come to lunch, but wipe your feet and bring your own PB&J. A little hostess gift would be much appreciated.

How can Bush select him for Homeland Security when the Senate doesn't seem to want one created for a cabinet position.

The Senate can delay Homeland Security but they can't stop it, at least if it means America's security is at stake they run the risk every minute they delay.

Besides, Tom Ridge has only been there a short period of time.

I'm not saying that Tom Ridge should be kicked out. My viewpoint he would continue in whatever capacity that suits the President. There are several positions open, once Homeland Security is established, for men/women with strong moral character and integrity. I believe Bernard Kerik has proved himself til now to be an asset for homeland security.

How can one justify just kicking him out when he has not even had the advantage of it being a cabinet position.

I honestly don't see Tom Ridge being kicked out of anything, Bush knows those he can trust and is fighting for the right to be able to managed the department however he see's best in managing the workforce. I can't say this any clearer, as far as the chain of command Ridge would continue his capacity. From there all positions are open for filling. To accomplish the dynamic goals the President has spoken of, it will take very talented people that knows how to stay focus and accomplish the task they will be given. The days of employment for the sake of making a paycheck is over(the previous administration comes to mind here). There are peoples lives at stake with every decision that needs to be made.

One of my sons is a chef. How 'bout I wrap him up and mail him to you. Then you can have your house on the lake and a gourmet chef, too.

I know which one you're talking about, reDub, but I don't seem to have it in my files.

Gotta get to bed, but before I do, one more from the ranch......
