President Bush, while meeting with his cabinet, denounced the attack against Israel that killed seven and injured 80 people at the Hebrew University cafeteria. He issued a statement on America's current economic growth -- not as strong as he would like, but showing strong signs within the new Department of Commerce report (echoed by some private forecasters) that there will be growth of three to five percent, rather than the 1.1 percent for the spring quarter just past.
Bush met privately with Rudy Guliani, who was in the DC area to give a speech.
Ari Fleischer noted at his press briefing that 60 presidential nominees are awaiting confirmation in the Senate, among them: the Deputy Secretary of Energy; FEMA's Deputy Director; NASA's Deputy Administrator; the Office of Management and Budget Deputy Director; 29 foreign policy nominees (some for critical functions); and of course, judicial nominees. He noted that yesterday Daschle "made a commitment" (undefined by Ari) to the President about the nominations on hold and that some Senate members now are objecting to the commitment.
We're a little light on photos today.

Re: #78
Love that picture of Bush pitching. The Democrats were so JEALOUS!
Thank you, Gretchen, for all the great pics. If I were the Bush's, I'd go to Kennebunkport for part of the vacation.
I LOVED it there.

OH MY GOSH Don't get me started on the San Juan Islands! I can well believe the misty-eyed departure because I have experienced it. San Juan Island itself is called the Banana Belt of Washington State ... a friend and I took a day trip there a couple years ago, a real serendipity time. We left really early and drove north, paralleling the North Cascades and watched the sun rise above the mountains and the mist as we went. After taking the Anacortes ferry to San Juan Island, we drove to the Old British Fort and investigated where the Pig War almost happened between the US and England with a quiet little bay to soothe the visitor; (here is the British Fort, with original buildings and the officers' garden, from the mid-1860's era)
toured a little (award-winning and new) winery, had an early dinner in the sun above the Friday Harbor marina on a deck ... ferrying around through the little passages ... it was like leaving The Old Country to get back on that ferry!

Thank you guys so much. I told Howlin once how, when I was a kid people were always broke after Christmas and partied out (Dec 30th) so my parents would always say "Don't worry honey, we'll celebrate your birthday in July." So I would wait the entire month, hoping they'd remember my "birthday". I always remembered, they always forgot.

I'd like to know how Rumsfeld keeps that cast so clean! I'm thinking .. he could really deck a reporter with it .. LOL

Sure, you stupid Dems, pack the Homeland Security Dept. with civil service people like you did the airport security. Some days you have to wonder if the dems would rather die than lose the power of office. That might not be a good move for the Dems ..
First .. it looks like they are tying the President's hand
And Second .. from what I hear on the news many folk are PO'd about the airport security and I don't think the public want these same people running Homeland Security

The only bad thing about this paradise is that now the San Juan Islands have been "discovered". In fact, the cover story on this month's Sunset Magazine is about the San Juans. It talks about how there's two kinds of money on the Islands: "New Money" and "No Money".
It goes on to say that people who were born and brought up in the islands can't afford to buy houses anymore because "new money" is coming in and driving up the real estate prices. There are some huge mansions being built and they're gobbling up the waterfront property. There are even some Hollywood types that have now discovered them :-(

If the FBI and CIA are not restricted/limited by civil service regulations, then the rest of the Homeland Security Dept. needs the same flexibility!

I was wondering if that was how he hurt it in the first place. Maybe that story about the operation was a cover-up. <grin>

Thanks, DrDeb. I'd have missed this if not for your post. It was good.

I know this is a sad one, but I think it says a lot about the man who is our president.

If you find your small, private Lake Tahoe, will you let me know? We could be roomies. I get the BIG bed.

"The President is going on vacation next week; Watch out Saddam. He can conduct a war just as well from Crawford as from the White House...maybe better since he won't have all those picketers outside his window. :)
