The latest News10/SurveyUSA election poll shows Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon opening a narrow lead over incumbent Gov. Gray Davis.
Pollsters asked 861 likely California voters whom they would vote for if the election were held today. The results show Simon in a narrow lead, with 46.7 percent of those surveyed saying they plan to vote for Simon. Davis garnered 45.4 percent, while 7.9 percent were undecided. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percent.
Simon's lead was greatest in the Central Valley and inland Southern California, while Davis had the most support in the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
The poll showed strong support for Davis among minorities, with 72 percent of Black voters and 52 percent of Hispanic voters intending to vote for him. Whites preferred Simon by a margin of 50 to 44 percent, with 7 percent undecided.
The responses also showed support for the candidates split along gender lines. The poll revealed that 50 percent of men prefer Simon, while 44 percent plan to vote for Davis. The situation is reversed among women voters, with 47 percent opting for Davis and 43 percent intending to vote for Simon.
