Iraqi buildup near border puts Kuwait on heightened alert

Monday, July 29, 2002 ABU DHABI — Kuwait has drafted an emergency plan in coordination with the United States as officials reported an Iraqi buildup near the Kuwaiti border.

On Monday, the Kuwaiti Al Rai Al Aam daily reported that authorities have cancelled all vacations for civil defense employees until further notice. The newspaper said the move is part of heightened preparations for an Iraqi attack.

The Kuwaiti Cabinet was presented with what was described as an emergency plan to counter an Iraqi military strike on the sheikdom over the next year.

Kuwaiti officials said the plan warns that the sheikdom can expect to be the first target of an Iraqi attack either prior to or during any U.S. military campaign to topple the regime of President Saddam Hussein. The Kuwaiti plan cited the Iraqi military buildup near the Kuwaiti border, Middle East Newsline reported. The plan, discussed on Sunday by the Cabinet, is meant to respond to both internal and external threats from the Saddam regime. Officials said the plan raises the prospect that Iraqi soldiers will storm Kuwait while Saddam's agents will try to launch a sabotage campaign within the sheikdom.

The plan was drafted in coordination with several ministries and the military, as well as the United States.

The Interior Ministry, Defense Ministry, the National Guard and the security agencies organized the plan into sections that discuss border security, internal security and security along the Iraqi front.

Officials said the plan will be tested in exercises and simulations. They said Kuwait's allies, particularly the United States, have been consulted in drafting the plan.

"Any attack must be decisive and lead to the collapse of the Iraqi regime," Kuwaiti Information Minister Ahmed Al Fahd said. "The view of Kuwait and Gulf Cooperation Council countries [on a U.S. attack on Iraq] depends on the collapse of the Iraqi regime."

You have to admit though, that if Hussein attacks Turkey, Saudi Arabia, or Kuwait...that all the "discussion" in the world about whether or not the U.S. should use our military against Iraq will be moot.

Very good point

Too good to be true. A chance to let Iraq sodomize Kuwait again and have them wipe out the Whahabiast beasts in the Kingdom of Saud before we come in and make the Baathist regime a smudge stain and take command of 40% of the world's oil supply.

One can dream.

King Abdullah is probaly the smartest one (remember, he threw Arafart

Actually his father did that. The Black September terrorist group that killed all those Israeli athletes was named after that "action".

It's sure going to be a great 50th birthday for this beauty

That's an H model, as are all the ones still flying (save a NASA one). They are just babies, the youngest one was built in 1964, IIRC.

"This would actually make sense. Saddam can't sit around and let a build-up take place like he did in Gulf War part une"

It would only guarantee his destruction and make the political side of our job easier. Besides, he couldn't do it.

Why limit this to Iraq? Why fight again to preseve the ingrates of the al Sabah family? If we install a republican government in Iraq, then we ought to do the same within Kuwait.

...and the in Saudi Arabia...

...and then Jordan...

...and then...

France ??????????????

Saddam stands zero chance if he waits. Just like in the Gulf War, where he waited rather than roll into Saudi lands, and could not defend. It would have been a tougher war without those Saudi bases.

Saddam also stands a zero chance if he does invade Saudi.

Saudi is one h#ll of a long peninsula. The U.S. can always set up a beachead 100 miles south of wherever Saddam is. The deeper that Saddam goes into Saudi, the longer and more fragile his lines of supply become and the greater the chance that the U.S. will launch an "Inchon" behind his lines.

If the U.S. decides that they want Saddam totally defeated, there is not much that Saddam can do to prevent the inevitable outcome.

We need to assess a "save your a$$" fee this time around.

Agreed. Wasn't it last summer when our "friends" the Kwuaiti's were voting with OPEC to increase the price of oil to the USA? This time, we get HALF of their oil fields. And 3/4 of Iraq's oil fields. And, just for being assholes, ALL of Saudi Arabia's oil fields. Sounds about fair to me.

Oh, the Kuwaitis snuggle right up when they're in trouble. Remember Sept. 11th and the Kuwaitis' pinko reaction. Screw them. Let Saddam have them, then we'll take out Saddam.

The only "hope" he has is to throw everything at Kuwait

If he wants to be in a strong position, he cannot afford to stop at Kuwait. He must get to Saudi Arabia. Once in control of the oil fields of both Kuwait and Saudi, he would be in such a strong position, especially if he threatened to Nuke em all, if attacked.

It took 3 months to build up the force last time, in 3 months he would have changed the state of Israel into a Palistinian State.

He would be bordered by Iran and Yemen, really no place for the US and her allies to look for a land base. Then there is Turkey, but the chances of being trapped by the Iranians while attacking Saddam's Armies in Saudi would leave everyone in a quandriey.

Imagine, Oil prices through the roof, the Stock Market would crash though the floor, the world economy, would grind to a halt.

As we see once again in the world, "Talk is Cheap". If we (governments) are going to sit around talking about it, men of action are going to rape and conquer, just has they have always done in history.

"There is a time for Talking and a time for WAR"
