...and Utah just happens to be the most beautiful state in the Union.....too bad it's a "locked Mormon society" where nonbelievers just are not welcome - otherwise, it'd most definitely be in the retirement plan book.
To: ErnBatavia
I'm sorry you feel non-believers are not welcome here, it is quite the opposite. Check out St George, it is a wonderful city where a lot of people retire to, many non-LDS people there.

Maybe that was true years ago, but I have lived in Salt Lake City for 11 years and have made many LDS friends. I don't go to church, and they know it, but it doesn't make any difference that I can notice.

"locked Mormon society"
"Locked" No, it just is a bunch of people who have discovered that they can stand up for what they belive and not be bullied into accepting things that they do not belive in. Go Mormons

Sorry, Girl, but that is clearly impossible. Utah lacks one of the elemental qualification to be considered a truly beautiful locale- it has no ocean. Sorry, but those are the rules...
Be content that you have Concealed Carry- it is a wonderful thing.

Sounds even better than Florida's CCW laws. Here, it's illegal even with a permit to come on campus with a gun. Since I always spent at least part of the day on campus, a CCW permit was useless to me, so that's why I never got one.

Agreed. If standing for principle is a bad thing then this Republic must have been organized by some of the wost political villans ever found upon the planet.
Being a native Californian with several kids it is a bit refreshing to go visit "fortress Utah".

LOL! The Great Salt Lake used to have some pretty good beaches, but since the floods of 1983, brine shrimp have taken over, and it is smelly there. I can remember going as a child to the Great Salt Lake and floating in the water (you can just sit down and float without any effort), but now it is too stinky...

There is indeed a whiff of lawlessness in the University of Utah's position. "Whatever decision is handed down, we will, of course, abide by," Esplin says. But the university continues to enforce its gun ban in spite of the legislature's refusal to reauthorize it, as though free to disregard whatever laws it finds disagreeable.
The University is attempting to find an activist judge that will create legislation they like out of thin air I think.
Since the University has determined that it can ignore the legislature, one wonders if gun owners will determine that they can ignore the University. The University can perhaps find a civil judge to make law for them but it is more unlikely that a criminal judge would lock up a variety of citizens with CCW permits who decided to obey State law rather than University policy.

"One law professor announced his intention to resign if the university lost the suit, and another professor said that her colleague from New York was literally afraid to come to Utah to deliver a talk."Any chance these two were Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise?
To: ErnBatavia
That's not really true. It isn't a locked Mormon society. Mormons are wonderful neighbors, quiet and kind, and when you need something you can depend on them. And, Utah is truly beautiful. When you're Conservative, the best place to be is in either Utah or Wyoming. Folks in these states are really conservative, and they show it.

I have only one problem with the article...
Shouldn't it be "Utahan"?
To: Carry_Okie
I always thought it was Utahn, but I have seen Utahan used also. But Utahan is a bit awkward...
To: Utah Girl
My spell-check says to add the second "a." Sorry to nit-pick a great article.
BTW, I'll be in Virgin and St. George early next week on a speaking tour about my book. FReepmail me if you are interested.
To: ErnBatavia
I lived in central Utah as a child, for the entire decade of the 50's and then some. At that time, your description might have fit. But I moved back there in 1988 and stayed until 1992. As a Catholic, I was uncertain of my welcome, but there have been enough "outsiders" move into the state in the last 30 years or so that it no longer has that "closed" atmosphere except in some of the more hidebound towns. St. George, for instance, is a retirement town, a college town, and a resort area. Lots of non-Mormons either spend their winters there or move there permanently. The Catholic church in St. George was rebuilt while I was there. It has been added onto twice since I left because the parish is growing so fast.
And, it IS in the retirement books...every one of them I have seen.

Now I know that I should be using Utahan, instead of Utahn, not a nitpick at all. :) I'd like to read your book, I think I am going to order later on this evening.
