Sorry to hear about Woodstock. Glad to hear you have an effective protector. Another reader alerted me that my dog would just "lick a burgler", sadly I think that they are right and I'll have to consider a second dog.

and my daughter had a Basset-something else mix (the vet thought it was a German Shepherd That is too funny. My husband had a basset/german shepherd mix. He looked exactly like a german shepherd, except he had the basset legs. He had the basset "woof" too. When people would see him for the first time they would just roll laughing.

Looking at a Kimber or Colt 1991.Don't forget to look at the Springfield Armory .45's. Once you fire a V-10, you'll never go back. Having 9MM's and .45's isn't a problem. I have seen people mix up 9MM's in a .40.
Squantos is absolutely, positively correct about Wilson 8 round magazines with a 1911. I can't judge the mags for any other caliber but they are magnificent. A lot of people will argue about what 1911 to buy but not about Wilson's.

Dogs are GREAT protectors...and that is why our Govenment agents will always take them out first.

"What freaked people out at our house was our Basset Hound. The cute, little fuzzball had gigantic teeth. He also sounded about 30 pounds heavier when he'd growl at something from out of the darkness. "
I can top that. I have a 16 pound Shih Tzu (OK, he's a little fat) that is not a "yipper." When he barks, it sounds like a big, nasty dog. Its a really deep bark, I would say it sounds quite a bit like a basset hound's. Folks at the door would hear the bark and be on the look out for the "big dog" when they entered and saw only the little furball.

Thanks for the reality jolt, I needed that! You're welcome. Please don't rely on a Golden for protection. They're affectionate, loyal, fun and smart, but they don't have a mean bone in their bodies. That's why they're ideal for kids -- nothing a kid can do will make a Golden bite him.
They WILL go after other dogs, though, if one should invade their territory.
BTW, I read somewhere that Goldens are never used as guard dogs, because no amount of training will turn them into attack dogs.

what is wrong with people these days? When, as a people, we denied the existance of God, we denied the absolutes of Good and Evil and started down the slippery slope of relativism.
Once something like NAMBLA is able to exist in our society, it shouldn't be too surprising that children are snatched, used for sex toys and then killed.

"Never again will he be allowed to play alone in his own backyard."Unless of course Mom sits in a tree with a high powered rifle and scope.

A Shih Tzu makes a great guard dog. That's what they were bred for. We had one when I was a teenager. That little guy either didn't know that he was little or just didn't give a rip.

I'm waiting with baited breath for the "where were the parents" crowd to start up. Lighten up.
From what I can see this family was awake and aware.
I just hope this doesn't make them irrationally paranoid.
From what I understand the family was not at the corner bar or entertaining homeless strangers. Now there's a rational concept for you.

"Let it be a Golden,"))))
Wouldn't own an agressive dog, though I appreciate a bark when intruders come. Would rather do the shooting myself . I've been seeing too many kids lately with bites from GentleAsALamb.
Prefer a Springer who'd rather fetch than bite.

I did look at a SA. The clerk was not the best in the business and could not answer simple questions. Might have to head back and look them over. Not sure if I will spring for a "new" one before a long trip. Might just keep what I have and then see how much $$$$ is left when we return.

Dogs are GREAT protectors...and that is why our Govenment agents will always take them out first. My pit bull rotweiler cross breeds will slow them down coming into my house.
Seimic alarms and motion detectors let me know someone's coming.
Low tech blackberry canes around the fence line and closer to the house funnel them into clear fields of visibility.
It's great living out in the country!

I guess you've missed threads on this very board who blamed the father of Samantha Runnion for her kidnapping, rape and murder. Or those who blamed the Grandmother for going inside the home while the child played in her own yard.
It is also my understanding from news reports on this latest tragedy, the family didn't invite the stranger to stay at the house, but the friend whom the father was staying with after separating from his wife. This "stranger" has also been reported to be known by the wifes sister. Last I checked, when you a a guest in a home, it's rather impossible to tell the person who lives in the home whom they can or can not invite over.

Yeah, at Ruby Ridge the first thing the Feds did was shoot Randy Weaver's dog!

A 'leave your child in the backyard alone' ping for comments.
This is the original article where the family states they left their son playing in the backyard alone behind an 8 foot and padlocked fence.
OH, and E. Pluribus Unum, please accept my apology in advance for pinging you. I thought you might possibly find this story a little relevant to our discussion earlier. ;-) (which, btw, is why I pinged the others on this list)
