DOCTORS SHRUGGED by Russell Madden
Forty-five years ago, an immigrant from Russia (who might well have been denied admittance to this country had she faced today's oppressive restrictions) published a novel that described men of intellect withdrawing from the world. Rather than submit to increasingly onerous and stultifying laws and regulations, these business people, artists, and scientists refused to work under such chains. Better, they decided, to deny others the benefits of their skills, their knowledge, and their experience than to labor as little more than beasts of burden for unforgiving and demanding masters. ...

Nice post
I lived in NV, Las Vegas (out at the base and in town) for many years. Medical care was alway very expen$ive due to *almost* everyone having 3rd party pay. If you did not have insurance, you were SOL.... we had friends who drove to St George Ut (110 miles North of LV) to have their baby as it was $5K less....and this was in 1986.
Part of it is lawyers and part of it is how insurance is paid (80% and the hosp writes off the other 20% as bad debt?) Either way, Las Vegas was a lot nicer place to live in the 60s and 70s than today.....
(sigh) still miss the winters tho.

The cost of insurance is a big problem but not the biggest. If the award exceeds the amount of insurance, the doctor's home, savings, retirement, children's education money--everything--could be confiscated. Who wants to live under that kind of threat?
