My understanding is the Mom and Dad were separated, but working on the marriage. Dad was living with a friend, and it was a 'friend' of the friend who did the deed.

I also wonder how many copy-cats are 'triggered' when the first kidnapping is so widely reported.

This baffles me also. The way I understood it, the family went acrosss the st to a friends house and the transient was staying there also.

The grandfather of the little girl said (before the news of her being found), he didn't trust this "homeless person, there was something strange about him." I don't understand why the family even stayed and slept together across the st and with a transient person there yet. Strange.
