Milosevic Master Spy Says No Expulsion from Kosovo
Fri Jul 26,12:00 PM ET
By Julijana Mojsilovic
THE HAGUE, The Netherlands (Reuters) - The man who led Serbia's secret police during the Kosovo conflict denied Friday that Yugoslav forces engaged in a scheme to clear the province of ethnic Albanians during the 1998-1999 campaign.
Prosecutors accuse former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic ( news - web sites) of overseeing a Serbian "ethnic cleansing" campaign to clear Kosovo of its majority ethnic Albanians. They had hoped insider witnesses who held top positions under Milosevic, would verify his ultimate responsibility for events in Kosovo.
But Rade Markovic, one of the highest-ranking insider prosecution witnesses to take the stand in Milosevic's war crimes trial, denied that Serb repression led waves of refugees to leave Kosovo. He confirmed his ex-boss's suggestion that they fled NATO ( news - web sites) bombing and the risk of being drafted by Kosovo Albanian guerrillas.
Markovic, carefully led by Milosevic's questions, said the Yugoslav army and Serbian police had strict orders to protect Albanian civilians during NATO bombing.
"I never got any order, nor did I hear about any order or plan to expel Albanians," Markovic told the court during cross-examination by Milosevic.
Belgrade authorities transferred Markovic to The Hague ( news - web sites) last week from a local jail where he was held pending the outcome of a domestic trial in which he is accused of involvement in the murder of four political opponents of Milosevic. Markovic denies the charges.
Looking straight into the former Yugoslav strongman's eyes and replying to him in a short and clear manner, Markovic agreed that Milosevic never ordered Serb forces to hide evidence of mass executions of Albanians.
In what appeared a friendly exchange rather than the usual probing cross-examination, Markovic said he had no information on any war crimes committed in Kosovo, that those who committed such crimes were prosecuted and Milosevic himself said several times that "every crime must be immediately punished."
Markovic reiterated that his orders came exclusively from Serbia's then-interior minister and that Milosevic did not have direct control of Serbia's secret service when he headed it.
During questioning by prosecutor Geoffrey Nice, Markovic said he had no knowledge of bodies transferred from Kosovo to Serbia, a reference to mass graves near Belgrade discovered by Serb police in 2001, after Milosevic's ouster.
Milosevic is charged with genocide and crimes against humanity in Kosovo, Bosnia and Croatia during the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
The 60-year-old former Communist apparatchik says he does not recognize the court and has refused to plead to the charges, prompting judges to enter not guilty pleas on his behalf.
The trial was adjourned Friday for four weeks after doctors found that Milosevic was at grave risk of heart trouble and needed rest.

Yes, he was Slobo's "master spy" but right now he is the chief prosecution witness and his testimony is supposed to damn Slobo not support his case!! The UN Kangaroo Court stumbles stupidly.
The truth does set people free, imagine that?

During my time in Kosovo, I grew to believe that the majority of the mass evacuation was actually orchestrated by the KLA, as they were running away from the Serbian Army. They just kicked people out of their houses and killed those who wouldn't come. But that is just my theory after having had to deal with the KLA for 7 months.

The fact is that there was essentially a Muslim 'outsiders'
army, striking resemblance to Al Quaeda in Afghanistan, that came into Yugoslavia from Albania bringing elements of every terrorist group in the Middle East including binladens thugs. All the time NATO was bombing Serb Christian civilians ( in print, NATO has admitted the tactic was to terrorize civilians with the bombing!) from Italy, Italy was busy arresting KLA thugs running the biggest drug rings in Italy. Who the hell was it who ordered the US Military ( against the advice of US Intelligence!) to come to the aid of murdering, butchering, drug dealing terrorist thugs in their attempt to STEAL someone else's country ? Ahh, yes , now I remember...It was HILLARY and her Pimp Husband Slick William the Impeached clumsily aided by the hippo Mad Maddie, the dyke at Justice, the bootlicking wimp Rubin, the socialist Strobe Talbott and all the air sucking leftist media in the USA and the suck up general from Lilla' Rok ArKANSAS, weasle-y clark . Can you tell that campaign makes me want to puke? and our brave soldiers and the Canadians too had to put up with the bull and they knew it to be bull.

"Markovic, carefully led by Milosevic's questions, said the Yugoslav army and Serbian police had strict orders to protect Albanian civilians during NATO bombing..."
And...
"Belgrade authorities transferred Markovic to The Hague ( news - web sites) last week from a local jail..."
Think maybe they will be renegotiating their deal with Mr. Markovic over the next four weeks??
Interesting to see how Mr. Markovic holds up, just as it will be interesting to see how Milo's health is intepteted in that same period.

I'm ba-a-ack but not for long -- serious illnesses in my family plus my Dad's recent surgery, so I'm a sort of nurse these days.
Thanks for the ping, vooch. Wraith: I'll write to you next, old friend. coug97: Welcome!
Tropoljac: I wasn't in Kosovo at the time, as Wraith and coug97 were, but I WAS THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT during Op Storm and I resent your flippant remark. I know better, and so do you. For shame, child, for shame.

I was under the impression that July 26 through Aug 26
was scheduled for a break in procedings for quite some
time and has nothing to do with Milosevics' health.
