Yesterday we noted a New York Times article in which reporter Sarah Lyall opined that a Turkish immigrant's murder in Sweden of his 26-year-old daughter because she "dishonored" the family by adapting to Swedish mores is a "tragic emblem of a European society's failure to bridge the gap in attitudes between its own culture and those of its newer arrivals"--not of Islamic immigrants' failure to conform to civilized norms. Writing in Partisan Review, Bruce Bawer tells a story that shows where this kind of thinking leads:

In September 2001 (only five days, in fact, before the destruction of the World Trade Center), the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet reported that 65 percent of rapes of Norwegian women were performed by "non-Western" immigrants--a category that, in Norway, consists mostly of Muslims. The article quoted a professor of social anthropology at the University of Oslo (who was described as having "lived for many years in Muslim countries") as saying that "Norwegian women must take their share of responsibility for these rapes" because Muslim men found their manner of dress provocative.

One reason for the high number of rapes by Muslims, explained the professor, was that in their native countries "rape is scarcely punished," since Muslims "believe that it is women who are responsible for rape." The professor's conclusion was not that Muslim men living in the West needed to adjust to Western norms, but the exact opposite: "Norwegian women must realize that we live in a multicultural society and adapt themselves to it."

maybe recently arab immigrants haven't been going as strong republican as they used to, so I'm sure your experience is valid, but the majority really did vote republican just 5 years ago and prior to that also. I am less offended by what this article says about muslims than I am about what it says about westerners. Europeans are behaving like a conquered tribe. Historically speaking, the conquering tribe has its way with the defeated tribe's women...while the defeated men look on meekly.

How far we have fallen! Can you imagine what would have happened 100 years ago if a group of muslims had tried this in any european nation? Can you imagine what would have happened to this idiot professor who said it was the women's fault?

It's quite simple, really. Westerners go to a foriegn (sic) country, we have to abide by their rules. Non-westerners come to a civilized country, we have to abide by their rules. Isn't multiculturalism grand?

I heard Neal Boortz talking about this issue this morning.

My wife is a teacher here in the metro Atlanta area, and at the beginning of each school year, she is given a manual of "appropriate behavior" in which to engage with the "international" community in the school. For instance, in some cases, she can never...repeat, never speak directly to a student's mother in a conference. She must address the father. In some cases, she isn't even supposed to greet the "international" parents as they bring their kids to school, etc. All this in the name of "not offending" other cultures! Seems to me, if I go to Italy or China, I don't expect the Italians or Chinese to bend over backwards to accommodate my culture. Rather, as a guest in their country, I should try to be respectful and act as they generally act (appropriately, of course!).
