God gave us stewardship over animals. They are here for our use -- but not our abuse. There is nothing morally wrong with killing animals for food, fur, leather, for medical reserach, or in self-defense, but killing them out of sheer anger is an offense against the dignity of life -- and to do so in such a horrific manner, and in the presence of young children, is a scandalous sin.

Killing is not in itself morally wrong; deliberate cruelty is. I don't care if it's "just a cat" -- it is alive, and capable of suffering. Sometimes we cannot avoid causing animals to suffer -- but people who cause animals (or people) needless suffering will be called to account for their hard-heartedness someday.

I certainly can't cast the first stone. While I've never done anything quite as horrible as this guy, I've done some truly heartless things in my life, things for which I'm deeply ashamed. Like me, this guy is going to have some e'splaining to do when he's standing before St. Francis and the Lord in Heaven. May God forgive him -- and me -- before then.

Incarceration is necessary because he has emotional problems, fool! This emotional nitwit needs to learn to control his behavior and his emotions. Incarceration concentrates the mind wonderfully. The WakeUp call the judge is yearning for this undoubtedly "confused young man" would most quickly come to this miscreant were he to take up habitation in one of the state's secure institutions.

As has been so many times pointed out, even the craziest psycho in the history of crime has never been so "driven" by his insanity to assault a woman while a uniformed police officer was in sight. Even the true crazies (eg Richard Chase the Vampire Killer) seem to retain enough sanity and instinct for self preservation to refrain from that.

Similarly, there are sick, psychotic people with bad tempers who think killing animals for fun is OK. But even most of them know that others disagree, and might intervene. So they commit their tortures of tiny creatures out of the sight of witnesses, or around only such witnesses as they know are also of depraved tastes.

The fact that this maniac was so overcome with rage after being scratched by a kitten that he stomped it to death in front of witnesses and those witnesses were children (which most people would consider an exacerbation of the initial offense) suggests to me that the perp is indeed a dangerous future serial killer. That he has so little impulse control, so much rage, and so little respect for the most basic tenets of society (don't kill tiny animals for the sheer heck of it, and certainly not before children or ANY witnesses) suggests that his next atrocity will be a murder. Probably of a woman, who he thinks is making fun of him, or who rejected his advances. He will be heard from again, and everyone will wonder why the danger signs weren't acted on in time.
