Barney Frank found Gobie through an ad in the Washington Blade, the newspaper serving the local homosexual community. Gobie had run an ad in the classifieds touting his wares--"a hot bottom and a good time".

Barney got in trouble, not because he was frequenting Gobie, but because he tried to fix some traffic tickets that Gobie had received across the river in Alexandria.
