We beat the Soviets because we drove them into bankruptcy. They had to compete with SDI - "Star Wars." The Apollo Program had again convinced them Americans can and will do what they set out to do. The flooded oil market added to their woes, as it was a main source of their wealth. Along with the Pope, we helped to advance breakaway Soviet satellites. Add to that, the Soviets were fighting the Afghanistan war and it too ate up their treasury. So, we took them on militarily, politically and economically.
We must not give Castro something for nothing. Bush has told him to open up before the U.S. eases the embargo restrictions. But to give him what he wants, with no requirement in return, is insanity.
