The case of a 50-year-old Yauco man who may have raped more than 12 girls between the ages of 4 and 15 after drugging them inside his Rio Prieto home could soon lead to federal child pornography charges, police said Friday.
U.S. Customs agents have been feeding off the information provided by local police to make a move against Jose Robles Perez, who allegedly posed as a gynecologist, led victims to his office, and taped his sexual attacks, police said.
U.S. Customs spokeswoman Janice Carabello confirmed Friday the case was under investigation, but refused to say when the additional charges are expected to be pressed against Robles Perez, who is at Las Cucharas prison pending an Aug. 14 preliminary hearing.
Meanwhile, local authorities are broadening the scope of their investigation, looking into the possibility some relatives of Robles Perez's victims may have accepted money in exchange for giving up the girls for sex, police said.
A 27-year-old mother has already been arrested for allegedly taking her 8-year-old daughter to the man's office to have sex with the suspect in front of the girl, and then allow the man to rape her child, police said. However, the case of this Yauco woman may not be an isolated one, police said Friday.
"We have a grandmother who has been taking her 11-year-old granddaughter to the man's office for money," said Yauco police officer Jorge Muniz. "More people could be arrested in this case."
Police have also received information Robles Perez may have been sexually attacking boys as well, Muniz said.
"Anyone who knows someone who may have been a victim of this person, please call me at the Yauco police station, Muniz said.
The number of the station is 787-856-2104. Robles Perez was charged Thursday with separate counts of rape, child exploitation and pornography. For the past four months, police said the man had set up hidden cameras inside a small office in his one-story rental home. Police said he would pretend to examine the girls for a while, and then he would inject drugs in their private parts. Robles Perez would then rape the girls and record the attacks, police said.
During a house search, police retrieved more than 40 home-made pornographic videos and 200 pornographc pictures. The man is also suspected of selling the material through the internet. Police seized a computer and several CDs with pornographic material from the man's home.
Meanwhile, Court Administration records show the man has a long history of sexual assault and narcotics violations.
According to court records, Robles Perez was arrested in 1994 for rape and lewd acts in the jurisdiction of Guayanilla. He pleaded guilty to both charges in May 26, 1999.
Robles Perez was also arrested by authorities in San German for allegedly committing lewd acts in 1996. He pleaded guilty to that charge also.
On July 12, 2001, police arrested Robles Perez for drug trafficking and possession of drug paraphenalia. His next trial date in the case was set for Sept. 3, records show.
In this latest case, Robles Perez was also charged with helping a 14-year-old girl who got pregnant after allegedly being raped by him to have an abortion. The girl told a judge that Robles Perez gave her something to drink for several days "to fix the problem."
This case began two weeks ago, when employees of a K-mart store in Yauco Plaza alerted police that a man had been taking pornographic pictures involving young girls to the store to develop.
"More victims are calling us all the way from Cabo Rojo and Sabana Grande," Muniz said. "We are also looking for other minors who appear in pictures he took. You see him on a video showing the pictures he took. You see him on a video showing the pictures of the naked girls, saying their names and where they are from."
He found himself a real home in this Rio Prieto, Puerto Rico. Mothers, grandmothers and other relatives bringing this monster their children to rape and photograph in return for money.

How does society repair the emotional scars left behind on children that were sold to a monster, like this Robles Perez, by their own mothers, grandmothers and other relatives?
Tell me, how?
Bingo.
Well, the sexual abuse of pre-adolescent is nothing to be shrugged off lightly, but you're right about the moms and grammas being orders of magnitude more wicked in that they gave their children over to him for money. Even active pedophile rapists rarely prey on their own.
