He may have been trying to establish an alibi. His mother would have no way of knowing that he wasn't where he said he was. She may not be covering for him.

If it were my kid involved, not only would I not cover for him; I'd drive him to the police myself.

I'm pretty sure that the cell phone company would have a record of what cell he was connected through. That could place him within a couple of miles.

It's possible that he made that call and fabricated the story about the mall to provide himself an alibi. The guy was either really careless, really stupid, or really "wanted" to get caught.

Sounds like he made the phone call as a cover story. The cell phone bill will tell the truth, though.

It seems to me he was just trying to cover his ass. The cell phone records will tell the truth!
