Immigration officials say that tighter border security since September 11 has caused a continuing decline in the number of people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, but others are not so sure why all is quieter on the southwestern front.

For the eighth month in a row, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service reported a sharp drop in the number of immigrants detained entering from Mexico, viewed as the best gauge of how many are crossing the border illegally.

Didn't the Chief Border Agent in Arizona move agents away from the easiest places to cross and move the agents into position to keep the illegals from entering the desert?

The desert area is the easiest place to cross. There were few Agents out there, due to the environment. Shifting Agents from one area to another happens all the time due to the lack of manpower.

When Arizona sent National Guard troops to support the Border Patrol, at the official border crossings, didn't they move troops that were patrolling the Coronado Forest on the border already? They left the forest unprotected.

As far as I know, there were never National Guard troops in the Coronado Forest. My understanding was that they moved the troops from the airports. Either way, the troops were useless, wherever they were as they have no power to arrest or detain anyone.

I believe the Border Patrol has generated these reductions in apprehensions by leaving big, gaping holes for the illegals to sneak through. They've moved agents to the desert 'to save lives' and have taken the National Guard out.

We are getting the same reductions at the Ports of Entry. The Border Patrol has big gaping holes everywhere, they don't need to generate anything.

As I said earlier, the reduction is caused by many factors. 9/11, rumors about making the illegals fight in Afghanistan, the economy, the INS, ect...

What you need to understand, and the INS won't tell you, is that these numbers will start to rise again in the future, as they have been since October.

In October they had dropped off by 54%, by May the number was down to 21%. By October they will probably be leveled off and on the rise.

The other thing is the fact that the illegals are no longer returning to Mexico. In the past, approximately 40% returned within a year. I would bet that is down to around 10% now. When they get here, they stay.

The Border Patrol guesses how many illegals have slipped in by multiplying the number apprehended by some factor. How many do they claim they've apprehended, each month, and by what factor are they multiplying that number to create their guess-timate, now.

Yes they do, as do the independent immigration experts. How would you do estimate the numbers getting through?

Believe what you may, but the numbers are correct. You need to understand what this article is. It's INS propaganda. The INS is showing you the numbers are decreasing, claim they are the reason. In reality, they are just a small part of the decrees and the numbers will rise again.

If these numbers were off, you know I would be the first one here to say so.

According to articles like this, Aguilar is deliberately redeploying his agents so that apprehensions will be down while illegal immigration traffic is up.

FR Exclusive: Yemeni National Captured in Arizona, Five Yemenis May Still Be At Large!

"As evidence of Aguilar's confusion about the Border Patrol's mission, he recently redeployed his agents away from the border itself and has instead deployed them into the larger desert areas to rescue illegals found to be in distress."

"It is also reported that Aguilar has ridiculously attempted to explain away the trail markings, etc. by the hoards of illegals crossing through private, state and federal lands as instead being evidence of the area's new popularity to hikers and campers, because of the success of the Border Patrol at apprehending and stopping the illegals."

According to the other article I read, the National Guard's sophisticated surveillance equipment and extra personnel was a boon to the undermanned Border Patrol agents, in the Arizona forest, that were up against Coyotes that had lookouts using equipment that rivaled the military's.

It was these National Guard troops that were sent to the official checkpoints and not those from the airports.

instead of having rumores that we're going to conscript ilegals to fight in Afganistan there should be rumores that the border has been mined. That would help a lot more.

That's like me saying the fire ant migration in my yard is going down 300,000 a year, but my failing to mention that the total population of fire ants already in my yard building nests and laying eggs is in the millions and growing exponentially.

good analogy.

Mining the border might help. An invisible electric fence for humans might be a better PR preventative.

They got pulled from the airports also. I know, I work there.

Sounds like just a lot of smoke and mirrors.

What in the hell is somebody thinking when they pull National Guard troops from an area of the border where they're having an impact and move them somewhere else instead of calling up additional troops, when we're allegedly fighting a 'war on terror' and 3,000 Americans have just been killed?

Ask the Governor. The BP did not do it or request it.

You are stuck on this Aguilar fellow in Tucson. The border is 2,000 miles and Aguilar is in charge of about 250 miles of it.

The numbers are for the entire southwest border, not just Tucson. The numbers are down. Arizona is small factor in the overall picture, and Aguilar is even smaller.

Stop focusing on Aguilar.

Aguilar is just an example. I believe that there are many Aguilars on the border that have their marching orders from this administration. They're doing exactly what he's doing.

I don't doubt that the apprehensions are down.

What I seriously doubt is that illegal traffic is down. I believe that they're actually letting even more illegals in then ever before.

I agree with F16Fighter on this one. I believe these numbers are a bunch of crap.

Sounds like just a lot of smoke and mirrors.

Nice facts.

"As far as I know, there were never any troops in the Coronado Forest."

Have you had a chance to ask any of the Border Agents in that area, if the National Guard was indeed there and if they felt their assistance was "useless"?

Just curious to know how the Border Patrol agents, that are being surveilled (and worse), by the drug and illegal alien smugglers, feel about losing the National Guard's assistance?

"Which part of that upsets you?"

Okay, since you obviously didn't understand my post, I'll say it again slowly. Ahem...there...are...still...too...many...illegal...scumbag...aliens...coming...in. I'm sorry, but I don't see two and a half to six million (depending on who's numbers you use) illegal scumbag aliens getting into our nation, with no prospects of them being hunted down and deported, as a reason to celebrate! I don't care if that number is down from ten million, it's still too many!

When I hear the Border Patrol say they've shut down the southern and northern borders entirely, and are letting only those with legal documentation cross, and when I hear the INS report they're actively rounding up and deporting illegal scumbag aliens and throwing those who hire them in jail for decades, well, then I'll be glad to celebrate. Until then, there's no reason to be happy about the sub-sorry state of affairs on our borders.

There...do you now understand what I'm upset about?

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

A. Don't talk down to me. It won't get you anywhere.
B. Good news is better than bad news.
