It was fun, but I actually offered Lion Den Dan money not to send in my scores. LOL!

Even less-than-expected/desired results can be a learning experience, though. I learned -

1. There's a reason accomplished marksmen practice frequently - they actually shoot like they want to shoot.

2. The shorter the barrel the harder it is to find zero. The Marlin carbine in .357 Mag is definitely a quick-shooting brush gun, designed to find and hit your close target. I do believe I'll stick with more conventional long guns for those targets "out there".

3. The .22 rimfire was not made for long distance shooting (Ha! Like no one knew that, right?).

4. And most importantly, don't shoot with someone who has his lovely and gracious wife meet you at the door when you arrive with a big hug and kiss. It is definitely a distraction from the more serious aspects of one's visit.

Dan and I had a great time, though, and I would do it again (although next time I might practice a bit before actually shooting at the "official" targets).

Thanks for the invite!

Yep, I am still dead last overall (for those who submitted targets, would I have fared better if all had been mailed in?), but dont look like a total zero. It is comforting that in some of the individual stages I did as well, or better, than some of the shooters with much higher overall scores.

Next time: I will practice much more, will take my time, and will strive to be more consistent.

One other comment.

Note my centerfire scores. I started standing, then to kneeling, then to prone. The first ten rounds (without any warm-up) standing, were somewhat decent, with 2 x's. Moving down to kneeling, a bit difficult since I broke my back in the military, was just a tad worse. However, getting hammered by the recoil of the Garand against my t-shirt clad shoulder while prone was just too painful, and the score shows it.

Rimfire? No excuses, I sucked.

Good shooting. Looks like you beat me 4 stages to 2, and posted a much better overall score. it was fun to get to shoot with you.

For all reading this thread cold here are the rules in a nutshell:

1> No match or heavy barrels
2> No match ammo
3> No spotting
4> No match gear like shooting jackets, cuffed slings, spotting scopes.
5> Iron signts

This was a 100 yard shoot, slow fire, ten round each for standing, sitting, and prone, rimfire and centerfire. The target used was a SR-21.

There are several accomplished shooters who gave up their match rifles or scoped hunting rifles to shoot this match. In the centerfire there were Garands, Mausers, Mosin Nagants, AR-15s, FN-FALs, a 45-70 and a 357.

The lead in thread for this match is here .

Boy, did I miss my spotter scope. LOL. This was a lot of fun. Congatulations to C Martel for overall.
I was hoping to shoot the match with the '03A3 but it still hasn't arrived. I called the CMP and the delivery dates are at 3 months.

Jerry, I cant shoot kneeling anywhere near as well as sitting. Also, with the .22, mine is rigged to use a standard sling, and I took full advantage of that. In HP NM, no sling is allowed for standing, but we allowed it for this match and I used it for both guns.

I spent a lot of time sighting in my .22 off my back porch. The CCI stinger .22 dropped only about 4", where as other stuff I tried dropped about 10". I did a lot better with the .22 than I had feared I would.

You have been shooting such a short time and you're knocking on Expert Scores? OK, now I'm jealous. LOL.
I've been at this for ten years and wasted eight of them trying to get a Garand to work.
You better watch out for the women on the line. I still remember a tall blonde wearing a leather shooting jacket and tight jeans. I was scoring directly behind her on the 600. That was four years ago and I still remember every single move she made. I don't remember doing anything else at that match.

I shot the rimfire portion sitting, and it was heck on my back. So, when I shot the centerfire course, I resorted to kneeling, which was somewhat better for the back, but not as steady.

I didn't use a sling for any portion. The 10/22 doesn't have swivels, and the Garands web sling is too narrow to do anything other than cut off circulation to the supporting hand.

I think that I will try Stingers if we shoot something like this again. I shot the $9.00 for 525 Federal hollow-points at Walmart ammo for the rimfire, and CMP surplus LC69 M2 ball ammo in the Garand. I have, since we shot, modified the Garand with a "Holbrook device". This replacement for the op rod catch does not eject the clip after the last round, allows you to singly load rounds from 1 to 7 into the rifle, and does not allow the bolt to slam forward until you want it to. This eliminates all possibility of "M1 thumb", and makes the Garand much more convenient for matches of this sort. Without it, I had to fire an 8 round clip, then reload an 8 round clip, then eject the clip and 6 loose rounds.
